Any part of this Safari can be changed to fit you – just let us know.

Day 1 – Journey to Mgahinga Gorilla Park:

Your 10-Day MORE TIME with the Primates Luxury Safari begins as we pick you up at the Airport in Kigali or at the hotel you are staying at in Kigali. It is a 3-hour drive to Mgahinga Gorilla Park. You lose one hour at the border as you switch to East African Time from Central African Time.

You will need an East African Visa that is obtainable from the first East African Country that you Visit (Kenya-Rwanda – Uganda are participants in the East African Visa Program). A Yellow Fever Certificate is required but not always asked for.

At Mgahinga Gorilla Park your best and only luxury Lodging Choice is the exclusive Mount Gahinga Lodge which comes at a reasonable price for the value that you receive

Afternoon Activity: Mount Gahinga Lodge offers various activities to its guests such as a scenic Volcano Caldera Walk, a visit to the Batwa Heritage Village that it built, a Forest Walk with first People of Forest, the Batwa. You can as many do, relax and chill out and read one of our Gorilla Reads, a book about the area.

Meal Plan:  Lunch – Dinner

Lodge: Mount Gahinga Lodge

Mount Gahinga Lodge – Mgahinga Gorilla Park – Exclusive:

This is an exclusive luxury Lodge with an added plus, and that plus is affordability. It is at least 1/3 less in price than what other exclusive Luxury Lodges go for per night.

Why an exclusive Lodge at an affordable price? The answer is a simple one – Traffic. The Lodge is at the entrance to Mgahinga Gorilla Park, and the park attracts a fraction of the visitors that make their way to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. In other words, Mgahinga Gorilla Park is off of the beaten tourist path and the reason Mount Gahinga Lodge is value Plus.

From the Lodge, you have incredible views of the Virunga Volcanoes and since the lodge is 2,000 meters above sea-level you have great views of the surrounding area.

Day 2 – Gorilla Trekking with the Nyakegizi Gorilla Family

An early Breakfast – the right equipment and clothing for your Trek. Further Trekking Information that will make this day more comfortable is found here.

Gorilla Wear:  We suggest a day pack, packed lunch from the lodge, two liters of water, long trousers, long-sleeved shirt, hat, boots, thick socks, and sturdy gardening gloves.  All this is not to make a fashion statement but for your protection against nettles, thorns, brush.

Tuck your trousers into the socks for extra protection against fire ants and exposed skin from touching nettles that abound here.

We supply you with bottled water, a walking stick, and a porter. One porter is needed for two people.  The porter is an added plus since they assist you on the at times challenging trek.

After the orientation, you go on your Safe and Secure Gorilla Trek with Rangers and security escort to visit the Nyakagezi Family. They are the only gorilla family that is trekked here. The Nyakagezi group is unique in that there are Five Silverbacks in the family. That is very unusual and is a reason many choose to trek in Mgahinga Gorilla Park. The family is led by Mark, who is assisted by his brother Mafia. The father, who has retired from leadership is also part of the group.

The trek is from four to five hours in length. They like to be in a somewhat open area which makes this one of the best groups for photographers.

The trek begins at 2,200 meters above sea-level which is typically not problematic for most trekkers here.

The temperature during the trek does not often exceed 25 degrees Celsius. Early morning temperatures are around 10 degrees Celsius.

The trek in Mgahinga Gorilla Park is over most days by 1:00 pm.

You can relax or partake in one of the activities offered by Mount Gahinga Lodge.

Meal Plan:  Breakfast – Lunch – Dinner

Lodge:  Mount Gahinga Lodge

Day 3 – Golden Monkey Habituation Experience:

Breakfast and it is off to the Golden Monkey Habituation Experience Trailhead orientation, and then you are off into Bamboo Forests where the Golden Monkeys make their home.  They weigh about 30 pounds, are quite beautiful to see, and you will hear them screeching long before you reach their location.

You spend about 4-hours observing a group of over 100 of them as literally flit about the bamboo forest near you, above you and around you.  They are an endangered species, some of it is because of the loss of habitat and their lack of reproduction.

The largest Golden Monkey Population is found in Mgahinga Gorilla Park.  You can only see them in the Virunga Volcanoes.

After the trek, we move to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest where we check you in at either the exclusive Clouds Mountain Gorilla Lodge or the Upmarket Gorilla Safari Lodge.

Meal Plan: Breakfast – Lunch – Dinner

The  Quality of Service and Meals has not always been what is considered a norm for upmarket lodges, and it is reflected in various online feedback.  We use the lodge due to its location.

Trekking is here is different from Mgahinga Gorilla Park and the Volcanoes there, here you trek up and down valleys and ridges until you reach the location of the Gorilla Family.
