As you venture towards the largest national park in Uganda, prepare for a captivating journey ahead. Although the drive from Kampala takes approximately 6 hours, the scenic route promises to be a worthwhile experience.
Heading northward, you will traverse through charming towns like Luweero and Masindi, while the picturesque green landscape unfolds before your eyes. Along the way, catch glimpses of hamlets, villages, small towns, and the delightful sight of roadside vendors offering their delectable food and refreshing drinks. The ever-changing scenery ensures that the journey remains engaging and fascinating throughout.
Sit back, relax, and enjoy the enchanting vistas as you make your way to Murchison Falls Park, where extraordinary wildlife encounters and breathtaking natural wonders await you.
Lunch at the historic Masindi Hotel
Enjoy a delicious lunch at the Masindi Hotel, which happens to be the oldest hotel in Uganda, established in 1923. During its prime years, the hotel served as an overnight stop for travelers who embarked on seaplane flights from Cairo to Cape Town.
To reach the hotel, these travelers would be transported by bus from Butiaba, located on Lake Albert, and would spend the night at the Masindi Hotel to rest and rejuvenate. The hotel holds a special place in history as it hosted notable guests, including the filming crew who worked on parts of the well-known movie “The African Queen.”
Additionally, the hotel played a role in the recovery of the famous writer Ernest Hemingway, his wife Mary, and their pilot, following two separate airplane crashes. One of these crashes occurred within the park near Murchison Falls, leaving them stranded without much food but with a few beers and a partially consumed bottle of scotch. The Masindi Hotel provided them with a place to recover and regain their strength after these challenging incidents.
After lunch continue to Murchison Falls Park:
Nile Safari Lodge:
Encounterthe exclusivity and eco-friendliness of Nile Safari Lodge, a remarkable accommodation with just eight Bandas overlooking the picturesque River Nile. Despite its secluded setting, the lodge remains easily accessible for game drives on the northern side of the Nile, thanks to the nearby Paraa Bridge.
Nile Safari Lodge surpasses expectations when it comes to rooms, meals, and service, raising the bar for luxury accommodations. The main lodge features a bar, dining area, and a stunning swimming pool that offers breathtaking views of the Nile.

Day 2 – Murchison Falls Park:
Morning Game Drive:
Start your morning with a choice of a delicious breakfast or a cup of coffee before embarking on an exciting adventure. The dawn breaks around 6:30 am, and by 6:45 am, the sun rises, illuminating the savannah and signaling the return of carnivores from their nocturnal hunts. Witness the awakening of the savannah as a new day begins, and be prepared to spot a variety of birds during the early morning hours.
Keep your camera at the ready to capture amazing photos if an opportunity presents itself. We recommend using a bean bag to stabilize your camera and ensure steady shots of lions or leopards, should you encounter them.
After the approximately three-hour-long morning game drive, we suggest taking some leisure time at the lodge. Relax by the pool, stay connected with loved ones through the internet, or make new acquaintances and exchange exciting safari stories. Following a satisfying lunch, the next activity on the agenda will be a thrilling Wildlife boat cruise along the Nile.
Wildlife Boat Cruise to the Bottom of the Falls:
After lunch, get ready for one of the highlights of your Murchison Falls National Park Safari: a boat safari trip up the Nile River. Relax as the boat gently moves along the river bank, granting you scenic views of crocodiles, an abundance of hippos, elephants, buffaloes, various antelope species, and a wide array of birds, including the majestic fish eagle and elegant storks. Keep your eyes peeled for captivating wildlife moments, such as herds of elephants cooling off, playful hippos, and crocodiles basking lazily in the African sun.
As you continue, a magnificent sight awaits you: Murchison Falls, renowned as the most powerful waterfall in the world. The River Nile narrows to 50 meters above the falls, rushing through a 6-meter gorge, before plunging an impressive 43 meters. The sound of the falls is overwhelming, and witnessing this natural wonder showcases the dynamic force of nature.
Upon reaching the base of the falls, disembark from the boat and embark on a guided hike up the world’s most powerful waterfall – Murchison Falls. The refreshing mist from the falls will keep you comfortable as you ascend. Once at the top, your driver-guide will be waiting for you. You’ll then cross the Nile by ferry and make your way back to Pakuba Lodge for a well-deserved dinner and rest.
It’s worth noting that this is the very trail that Winston Churchill used in 1907 when he visited the falls and descended along it, adding a touch of historical significance to your experience.
Meal Plan: Breakfast – Lunch – Dinner

One of the highlights of the sanctuary is the Lugogo Swamp, where you can embark on a boat ride and have an excellent opportunity to spot the ancient-looking shoebill. Additionally, there are several trails available for hiking with rangers, providing ample chances to observe wildlife and birds.
During your visit to Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary, you’ll have the unique opportunity to participate in Rhino Tracking, an exclusive activity offered here. Accompanied by a knowledgeable ranger, you’ll venture on foot for a Rhino Trek, which typically lasts around 1 1/2 hours. This experience allows you to come into close proximity with the rhinos, offering a thrilling and unforgettable encounter.
Before or after your Rhino Tracking adventure, you’ll enjoy a delightful lunch at the Amuka Lodge, located within the Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary. This provides a pleasant break, allowing you to relax and savor a delicious meal amidst the sanctuary’s serene surroundings.
