The Nyakagezi Gorilla Group the only Habituated Family To Visit In Mgahinga Gorilla Park
The Nyakagezi Gorilla Family is the only habituated of the Gorilla Families found in Mgahinga Gorilla Park where you track the Gentle Giants on the Mountains that Cook, the Virunga Volcanoes, part of the Virunga Massif. There are a total of 80 plus Gorillas on the Ugandan Side of the Volcanoes, 10 of them make up the Nyakagezi Gorilla Group.
The Nyakegezi Gorilla Group is the most misrepresented Family on the internet.
In 2019 the Nyakagezi Gorilla Family is home in Uganda’s Mgahinga Gorilla Park and have been there since the son Mark, the leading Silverback took over from his Father Bugingo along with his brother Mafia.
What you find on the Internet on various websites, including Tour Operators is that the Nyakagezi Gorilla Family is not home but on an excursion to Rwanda. The information regarding the Nyakezi Gorilla is most often outdated, past history but not the current reality
That has not been the case in the past 5 years. We are booking permits with the Uganda Wildlife Authority for well into 2019 and at time reserving rooms for our Clients for Mount Gahinga Gorilla Lodge.

Meet the Nyakagezi Gorilla Family – With its 10 Family Members that you can Trek in Mgahinga Gorilla Park. There 70 plus other Gorillas living in the Park, however, the Nyakagezi Gorilla Group is the only one that you can track due to various conservation reasons.
There are 3 Silverbacks, 2 Blackbacks, 2 Females, 2 Juveniles and one Baby-Toddler within the Group that is now led by Mark, assisted by Mafia who took over from Bugingo who remains part of the family. This is one of the few groups with 3 Silverbacks and on top of it three Silverbacks that get along with one another.
Normally when the Head of a group is replaced, overthrown, his authority usurped he is also cast out the group and often becomes one of the lone Silverbacks that are rarely spotted. Maybe it is that the son Mark, took over from the father, Bugingo and the rule and power are still in the Family.
The Group was habituated beginning in 1991 and opened for visitors in 1994, the only group in Mgahinga Gorilla Park open to visitors. The group is one of the hidden Gems of Gorilla Trekking in Uganda since either people do not know about them or they have been led to believe that they off on Vacation in Rwanda or the Democratic Republic of Congo. No, the Nyakagezi Gorilla Family is not lost but can be found in Mgahinga Gorilla Park in Southwest Uganda.
Most, both Trekkers and Tour Operators concentrate on Bwindi Impenetrable Forest for Gorilla Trekking since it has many more habituated Families making the Nyakagezi Gorilla Group open to last moment permits at times.
Why offer Gorilla Trekking Safari in Mgahinga Gorilla Park? Several reasons, the closeness of Mgahinga Gorilla Park to Kigali Airport, just a 3-hour scenic drive. Fewer Tourists come here since there is only one Gorilla Family that can be tracked it is Gorillas without the Crowds- there is only one upmarket Lodge, Mount Gahinga Lodge, compared to a dozen in the Buhoma area of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest.
The Trek with the Nyakezi Family is usually done in less than 4 hours, it is one of the easier groups to track since they have a more limited range where they feed during the day. The Group has 3-Silverbacks, the group is delightfully playful winning the hearts of trackers.
