One of our clients even won a photo contest organized by Brussels Airlines with a picture of a Baby Rhino resting its foot on its mother.
Rhino Trekking on Foot is safe because Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary is well-protected by electric fences to discourage poachers.
Since its establishment in 2005, the sanctuary has become home to 33 Rhinos, with more expected. Uganda Wildlife Authority Rangers ensure round-the-clock protection of the refuge and guide visitors during their encounters with the Rhinos. What makes this sanctuary special is the opportunity to approach the Rhinos on foot, allowing you to get as close as ten meters to these magnificent creatures.
Some Rhinos at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary will eventually be reintroduced into the wild. While the sanctuary is a large and heavily protected area, the breeding program’s ultimate goal is to release the Rhinos into wilderness areas that closely resemble the sanctuary’s terrain and vegetation.

Day 5 -Kidepo Valley Park:
Visit the Ik People on Mount Morungole
Today, you will visit one of the most remote tribes in East Africa, the Ik people, who reside on Mount Morungole at an elevation of 2,750 meters.
The Ik people are recognized as indigenous, and their name in their language signifies that they were the land’s original inhabitants, predating the arrival of the Karamojong. Currently, their population is around 13,000.
The Ik community now has representation in parliament, with Hillary Lokwang, one of only two Ik university graduates, advocating for their rights. To reach the Ik community, we will hike up the scenic Mount Morungole, as there are no roads leading to their villages, only well-worn footpaths. This visit will provide a unique and fascinating insight into the Ik people, their culture, and their way of life. Unlike other communities in Sub-Saharan Africa, the Ik acquire brides not with cows but beehives.
It’s important to note that Colin Turnbull’s book, “The Mountain People,” which portrayed the Ik people negatively, has been disproven. Turnbull attempted to argue that the Ik were incapable of love. However, we will discover a different reality during our visit as the Ik community welcomes us warmly.
Ascending Mount Morungole is not an easy task and requires physical stamina. The hike is an escorted and guided 8-hour round-trip adventure. The climb is steep, adding to the thrill of the day.
To ensure a comfortable hike, it is recommended to bring a packed lunch from Apoka Safari Lodge, bottled water (two to three liters), and energy snacks like dried fruit. It is advisable to carry a daypack, wear sturdy hiking boots, and dress in long trousers and a long-sleeved shirt to protect yourself from the elements. Wearing a hat is also recommended. Hiring a porter to carry your daypack and using a walking stick can make the hike more accessible and enjoyable.
Please note – a nature walk and game drive can be done instead of this hike.
Meal Plan: Breakfast – Lunch -Dinner
Day 6 – Murchison Falls Park:
After a hearty breakfast, we will depart for Murchison Falls National Park. We will stop in Gulu for lunch and continue our journey to Chobe Safari Lodge. This exceptional 5-star resort is at Murchison Falls and offers breathtaking views of the historic River Nile.
Once we arrive at Chobe Safari Lodge, we’ll have the pleasure of enjoying lunch. You can choose an outside table near the pool and the River Nile, allowing you to soak in the beautiful surroundings while savoring a delicious meal. The taste and presentation of the food will leave a lasting impression.
After lunch, you can take a refreshing dip in the fabulous swimming pool or relax in your selected room. All the rooms at Chobe Safari Lodge have a deck or balcony where you can unwind in the shade and enjoy a good book.
We’ll be treated to a delightful dining setting at Chobe Safari Lodge. Afterward, you can sit outside your room and listen to the enchanting sounds of the African night in the bush. You can choose from various accommodations, including spaces, standard tents (though nothing is ordinary), deluxe tents, and even two cottages. For an exclusive experience, the Presidential Lodge is also available.
In summary, your time at Chobe Safari Lodge will be marked by exceptional dining experiences, luxurious accommodations, and the soothing ambiance of the African night. Whether you choose a room, tent, or cottage, you’re in for an unforgettable stay surrounded by the natural beauty of Murchison Falls and the River Nile.

Gorilla Wear and Gear you will need:
Here is practical advice about what to wear while Gorilla Trekking in Uganda. Often, Trekkers are not dressed right for the occasion, which can spoil your day, and your focus might not be on the gorillas but on personal discomfort and misery. Wearing suitable clothing and footwear is about protection.
Gorilla Wear and Gear:
- DaypaAly, a waterproof day is preferred; you can use it as a carry when flying to Uganda. Pack all essentials inside the Daypack.
- Hiking Boots: Make sure that they have good treads on them. You will need ankle support, something boots give you and give you reactions on muddy trails. Have a good pair of merino wool socks.
- Long Trouser: They will protect you from nettles and thorns. Tuck the trousers into your socks for added protection from ants.
- Long-Sleeved Shirt: Neutral in color. Again, this is for your comfort and protection.
- Rain Jacket or Poncho: Pack into your Daypack. You never know when it will train. You are in an Afro-montane Rainforest.
- Tough Gardening Gloves protect your hands from thorns, nettles, and sharp branches.
- Wide Brimmed Hat: It gives you protection from the Sun.
- Camera Equipment – Binoculars: Ensure extra batteries and storage devices. Put them into Ziploc bags. Binoculars are not needed if you are not a birder.
- Packed Lunch and Bottled Water: You will need your lunch from the Lodge and two liters of bottled water.
- Insect Repellent – Sun Lotion – Sunglasses: We recommend the effective Australian RID Insect Repellent. Good Sun
- You will need a Porter and Walking Stick: The services of a porter free you on the often-difficult trail, and a local walking stick helps you and steadies you on the often-challenging path. We supply our clients with the bottled water and facial protective masks required for the actual encounter with the Gentle Giants.
