Meet the Nyakagezi Gorilla Family
The word Nyakagezi is where the group was discovered in the Park. The gorilla family was the only one that could be tracked in the Park. However, the Hirwa Gorilla Family decided to visit or migrate from Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda to Mgahinga Gorilla Park in Uganda.
While Bugingo was the lead Silverback, they had a “Wanderlust” case taking them to Rwanda and DR Congo. After Budingo’s retirement or forced abdication by his sons Mark and Mafia, Mark became the lead Silverback, assisted by his brother Mafia. Since then, they have remained on the Ugandan side of the Virunga Volcanoes in Mgahinga Gorilla Park, where you can meet them on a Gorilla Trek in the rainforests of the Park.
What is impressive is that the original leader of the Family remains with the group, which is a rarity in Gorilla Families. Usually, Bugingo would have become a loner roaming the Park alone. He must have a great love for his family that he could put aside his pride after losing his leadership position.
The Family includes ten members, of which five are Silverbacks. There are two adult females and three youngsters. The family members of Nyakagezi include Mark, Mafia, Rukundo, Ndugutse, and Bugingo, the silverbacks; Nshuti and Nyiramwiza, the two adult females wi three youngsters that are named Mutagamba, young Nshuti, and Fred. Fred was named after the Gorilla Doctor, Fred Nizeyimana, who treated the Family for a severe respiratory ailment.
