Murchison Falls Park 4-Day Private Luxury Big-5 Wildlife Safari in Detail
Day 1 – Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary
Your Murchison Falls Park 4-Day Private Luxury Big-5 Wildlife Safari begins by departing your hotel in Entebbe or Kampala at 6:30 am. The journey takes you to Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary, approximately a 3-hour drive from Kampala or just under four hours from Entebbe.
Upon arrival, you will check into Amuka Lodge, where you will be accommodated in a spacious tented Banda featuring an en-suite bathroom. From your private verandah, you will have the opportunity to witness Wildlife passing through the area.
Meals will be served in the main lodge, where you can also access WiFi. We can arrange a MiFi Router upon request, allowing you to work and stay connected online from your room.
The lodge offers additional amenities, such as a small swimming pool near the main lodge building and a bar and dining area where delicious meals will be served. Barbecue, South African style, is a popular choice. To learn more about Amuka Lodge, please refer to the provided information.
One of the exciting activities included is the Rhino Trekking on Foot experience.
Rhino Trekking on Foot:
At Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary, one of the highlights of your Safari in Uganda, you will have the thrilling opportunity to track rhinos on foot, accompanied by knowledgeable rangers who ensure your safety and provide guidance. This unique activity offers an exhilarating and unforgettable experience during your trip.
The rhino trekking experience lasts approximately ninety minutes, allowing you ample time to observe and capture remarkable photographs. One of our previous clients even won first prize in a photo contest organized by Brussels Airlines by submitting a picture of a baby rhino with its foot resting on its mother.
Rest assured that this activity is conducted with the utmost safety measures for safari goers. Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary is a highly secure area, protected by an electric fence to deter poachers. Since its establishment in 2005, the sanctuary has become home to 33 rhinos, with more on the way. Trained rangers from the Uganda Wildlife Authority are present 24/7 to safeguard the sanctuary and guide visitors to the rhinos. An exceptional aspect of this experience is that it is conducted on foot, allowing you to approach the rhinos at a close distance of ten meters.
Some of the rhinos at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary will eventually be reintroduced into the wild. While the sanctuary provides an extensive and heavily protected habitat for breeding, the ultimate goal is to release these magnificent creatures into their natural wilderness, where the terrain and vegetation resemble their current surroundings.
Lugogo Swamp Boat Outing:
Prepare for an exciting and adventurous late afternoon boat outing on the Lugogo Swamp. During this outing, you will be guided through the swamp in a paddle boat, searching for the elusive Shoebill.
While often mistaken for a stork, the Shoebill is more closely related to pelicans than storks. Shoebill originated from Arab traders who referred to the bird as “Flying Shoes,” drawing inspiration from its appearance. Interestingly, both the Shoebill and crocodiles trace their lineage back to the age of dinosaurs.
Shoebills mate for life, and both parents actively participate in raising their young. They primarily feed on lungfish and patiently stand still until they are ready to strike their prey. Keep your camera ready to capture incredible photos of these magnificent birds.
In addition to the Shoebill, you will have the opportunity to observe other fascinating waterbirds and mammals during your time in the swamp. Watch for Sitatunga Antelopes, otters, bushpigs, and more.
Your swamp adventure will last approximately three hours before returning to Amuka Lodge for the evening, where you can relax and reflect on the memorable experiences of the day.

Nile Safari Lodge:
Upon arrival at the park, you will check into the exclusive and intimate Nile Safari Lodge, an eco-friendly retreat that offers a truly exceptional experience. With only eight Bandas available, this lodge provides a sense of exclusivity and tranquility. Each Banda overlooks the magnificent River Nile, offering breathtaking views.
As one of the finest luxury lodges in Murchison Falls Park, Nile Safari Lodge stands out with its understated elegance and unique style. It surpasses all other accommodations in the area, providing an unmatched level of sophistication. This lodge is truly extraordinary.
Located in a serene setting away from the bustling areas of most lodges, Nile Safari Lodge offers a peaceful environment that perfectly suits discerning African travelers. Despite its secluded location, the lodge provides easy access to game drives on the northern side of the Nile, thanks to the convenient Paraa Bridge.
Nile Safari Lodge excels in providing superior rooms, exceptional meals, and outstanding service. The main lodge features a bar, a dining area, and a stunning swimming pool that offers picturesque views of the Nile.
Due to the limited number of rooms available (only eight), booking your Safari well in advance is highly recommended to secure your stay at this remarkable lodge.

Afternoon Boat Cruise on the Nile:
One of the most exciting experiences on your Safari is the boat cruise, not just any boat cruise, but one on the historic Nile River. During this cruise, you can witness various Wildlife, including pods of hippos, sun-basking Nile crocodiles, monitor lizards, herds of elephants, groups of buffaloes, and many water birds.
Many visitors consider this boat cruise the best wildlife experience in Uganda. The reason is the abundance of Wildlife you will encounter along the route from Paraa to the bottom of the falls. It’s worth noting that former President Idi Amin frequently navigated this section of the Nile on his boat.
The boat cruise holds historical significance as well. Sir Samuel and Lady Florence Baker, the first Westerners to witness the World’s most powerful waterfall, had their boat capsized by a hippo as they approached the falls. You can learn more about their fascinating story here.
Upon reaching the bottom of the falls, you can either remain on the boat for the return trip or hike to the top, offering a different perspective and adventure.
Top of the Falls Hike:
The guided Hike up to the top of the falls takes about 45 minutes. You are taking the trail that, in 1907, Winston Churchill took down where he was met by a boat that took him to Khartoum in Sudan.
Above the falls, you see how wide they are, and on the descent down the Western Rift escarpments. It pours through a six-meter-wide cauldron. You will be amazed by the sights, sounds, and mist.
Near here, Ernest Hemingway crash-landed in 1954 and was given up as dead, only to be rescued by a tourist boat launch.
A few years back, someone came up with the idea of building a dam. However, there was such an uproar from conservationists and the tourism industry that it quietly faded away.
Your driver-guide will meet you here and return to Nile Safari Lodge, where you can relax and chill out before dinner.
Please Note: The Top of the Falls Hike is not possible at present since the water level of the Nile is too high to disembark safely. You will cruise back down the river to the Paraa area.
Please Note: The high water levels on the Nile make the top of the fall hike impossible. However, we will incorporate a visit to the top of the falls into your Safari. Read more about the most Powerful Waterfall in the World here.
Meal Plan: Breakfast – Lunch – Dinner
Day -3: Murchison Falls National Park:
Sunrise Breakfast Cruise on the Nile:
Begin your morning with a remarkable experience: a sunrise breakfast cruise on the Nile, a key highlight of your four-day private luxury big-five wildlife safari in Murchison Falls Park. The cruise comes with the added perk of having your chef on board, ensuring breakfast is prepared to your liking.
Savor your freshly brewed Ugandan Arabica bean coffee while observing hippos and crocodiles in the tranquil waters. Keep an eye out for wildlife gathering along the shore, including the elusive Shoebill, which may occasionally appear. This boat breakfast cruise is a truly unique activity on the historic River Nile, the longest river in the World. Don’t forget to have your camera ready to capture some incredible photos during this unforgettable experience.
After the sunrise breakfast, continue your wildlife adventure from the comfort of your safari vehicle as you embark on a traditional game drive. Encounter various wildlife species and immerse yourself in the park’s natural beauty.
Afternoon Game Drive:
Go on a late afternoon game drive in Murchison Falls National Park, where you can spot a variety of Wildlife, including lions, leopards, elephants, buffaloes, giraffes, patas monkeys, and more.
During each game drive, you will be accompanied by an experienced Uganda Wildlife Ranger who carries a weapon for safety. The ranger will provide valuable insights and information about the park and the animals you encounter. With the combined knowledge of your driver-guide and the ranger, you won’t miss out on much during your game drive.
The safari vehicle is equipped with a pop-up roof, allowing you to stand up, have better views of the Wildlife, and capture stunning photographs. It’s important to note that climbing on the cars is prohibited as per park rules.
When you return to the lodge, we recommend trying the excellent Nile Beer while enjoying the scenic views of the Nile River. Nile Beer is one of Uganda’s favorite beverages and adds to the experience.
For a refreshing sundowner, consider trying Uganda Waragi with Krest Bitter Lemon. The term “Waragi” originates from “War Gin,” which was given to Ugandan soldiers by the British to boost their courage before battles.
Your meal plan includes breakfast, lunch, and dinner, ensuring a satisfying and nourishing culinary experience throughout your Safari.
Meal Plan: Breakfast – Lunch – Dinner
Day -4: Return to Kampala or Entebbe:
After enjoying breakfast, it’s time to check out of Nile Safari Lodge. Before departing, we will embark on our final game drive on the north side of the Nile. Thanks to the newly constructed bridge, there’s no need to wait for the ferry to access the park’s wildlife-rich areas. By this point, we hope to have encountered the Big 5, which includes lions, leopards, elephants, buffaloes, and rhinos.
Murchison Falls National Park is a part of the African wilderness, where unexpected events can occur. We never know what surprises await us around the next bend of the track we follow.
If you wish to capture steady pictures, we recommend using a beanbag to stabilize your camera and capture high-quality shots.
Chimp Trekking in Budongo Forest:
Our journey continues as we head to Budongo Forest, where we will enjoy a delightful lunch at Budongo Eco-Lodge. After our meal, it’s time for the highly anticipated chimpanzee trek. These chimpanzees are cared for by the renowned Jane Goodall Foundation.
Before the trek begins, there will be an orientation session where you will receive instructions on how to conduct yourself during the trek and in the presence of the chimpanzee troop. Wearing hiking boots, merino wool socks, long trousers, a long-sleeved shirt, and a hat is recommended. The trek itself is relatively easy and achievable for most individuals.
During the trek, you will spend one hour in the presence of the chimpanzees, observing their behaviors and unique ways. It will be a captivating experience as you spend time with our closest relatives in their natural forest habitat.
Budongo Forest is a significant Mahogany Forest in East Africa, and it is home to many fruit trees that nourish the chimpanzees within this expansive forest.
As our chimpanzee trek concludes, we will have lunch at the Budongo Eco-Lodge and drive back to Kampala or Entebbe, arriving just as the sun sets. We can arrange a day or overnight room before your departure flight, ensuring a comfortable and convenient end to your trip.
