All Hikes and Walking safaris are with a Ranger since you are in the wilderness, and one must take precautions to be safe without paranoia.
Common Sense must be applied, beginning with what you will wear, including the proper footwear.
When going on the hike or walking Safari or primate – listen to your Uganda Wildlife Ranger and their pre-hike orientation and instruction while on the trails. This way, you can enjoy your Hakuna Matata Worry-Free Safari with us.

What level of fitness is required for hikes and climbs?
The level for most day-hike climbs of Volcanoes takes a moderate fitness level. Some prepare for long gorilla treks, hikes, and rises by running, working out, and losing weight.
We will not put you on an extreme hike but have ensured that moderately fit visitors to Uganda and Rwanda can complete their walk or climb.
The longest Volcano Climb in one day can be up to 10 hours long. It is not the most challenging hike climb but one of the longest.
There is also the altitude gained, and some people suffer from shortness of breath not being used to hiking in mountainous regions.
Before embarking on a hiking or climbing safari, assess your physical fitness level and choose trails or peaks that align with your abilities—regular exercise and conditioning to build stamina, strength, and endurance. Additionally, research your trek’s difficulty level, terrain, and altitude to prepare mentally and physically adequately.

Follow the Instructions from the UWA Ranger:
This is not a walk in a park in the West – This is the African Wild, and you are dealing with Wild Animals whose behavior you cannot predict. That is why it is required that an experienced Uganda Wildlife Authority Ranger accompany you. and follow their instructions which are usually given at orientation before the hike or trek.
There are also park rules that need to be followed, which will also be discussed before the hike.
When you see animals, it is essential to stay downwind from them., That is especially important for a mother with her young ones.
Be alert to your surroundings so that you do not miss anything; at the same time, watch signals from your guide and listen when he speaks, pointing things out to you.
Keep the guide’s suggested distance from wildlife, and do not attempt to get closer to animals without the ranger guide telling you it is ok. This is for your safety and well-being.
If you are taking pictures, your ranger guide will ensure safety is maintained while you are preoccupied with taking pictures; listen for any verbal instructions from your guide. The rangers that are with you on a hike do carry weapons for an extra level of safety.

Encountering Snakes while Hiking:
Snake encounters are unusual but can happen just as they do while hiking elsewhere. e aware of your surroundings not to startle a snake. Snakes are not every day for safari-goers and hikes; snakes will often move away when they sense people approaching them. Most often, they have slivered away without you seeing them.
Do not run when you spot a snake while hiking., and the ranger will have you slowly back away—You must slowly move out of striking range when you see them curled up.
If a snake approaches you, they have not seen or sensed you. Let the ranger know; he will instruct you to move to the side and continue walking, avoiding the snake.
Wearing proper clothing and hiking boots. Tucking our trousers into your socks are all safety measures to protect you on a hike.
Do not walk away from Lodge or Tented Camp without a guide:
Lodges and Tented Camps are often located inside or outside national Parks where wildlife and predators may roam.
Lodges and Tented Camps are safe, and no deadly encounters with animals have occurred.
To be on the safe side, one needs to remember that you are not familiar with the area around and near the camps where you are staying.
It is good not to wander beyond the camp perimeter unless you do so with a guide. Often there may be hippos, elephants, or even predators.
Tourists rarely encounter any problems. The first of its kind here was when a Dutch woman in 2015 wandered from her camp alone near the River Nile. Drones, Dutch, and Ugandan Officials never found her, and her search continued for a lengthy period – Stay safe, stick close to the lodge.

When going on a Nature Walk, Hike, Gorilla Trek, or Volcano Climb, the terrain matters, and a walking stick that can often be purchased locally will come in handy. These sticks are usually taller than a person and give good support on slippery slopes, such as in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, Mgahinga Gorilla Park, Volcanoes National Park, Nyungwe Forest, and the Rwenzori Mountains Foothills.
It is suggested that you have a daypack where you put a light rain jacket, packed lunch or snacks, and drinking water, and most often, you will need at least 2 to 3 liters. Read more here.
Use Porters to assist you on long Hikes and Gorilla Treks:
Using a Porter is not only a freeing experience for you in that you have nothing to carry; it is a freeing experience for your Ugandan Porter.
Nothing is demeaning about using a porter. Instead, you empower a porter since their services are paid for, and that money is put to good use.
In some locations, especially for those longer hikes, you can use a porter to carry your daypack. This frees you to focus on your surroundings and the trail. You are free to take pictures while at the same time helping a Ugandan family.
Additionally: Use a local walking stick. They are common in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest and Mgahinga Gorilla Park, and they help you to steady your walk on the trail.
