Afternoon – Boat Safari on the Kazinga Channel
In the afternoon, prepare for one of the highlights of your safari: a boat safari on the stunning Kazinga Channel. Departing from the Mweya landing site, we use a smaller boat for a more intimate experience, and you can even request a completely private boat safari if you prefer.
As you glide along the channel that connects Lake George and Lake Edward, keep your eyes peeled for an abundance of wildlife. You’ll likely see hippos lounging in the water, elephants and buffaloes grazing along the banks, and a variety of bird species soaring overhead. This two-hour journey is a wildlife lover’s dream, offering countless opportunities for memorable photos and encounters.
Explosion Crater Drive
After the boat safari, we’ll take you on the Katwe Explosion Crater Drive. This scenic route is one of Uganda’s most picturesque drives, especially as the sun begins to set. The lighting creates perfect conditions for photography, and the views over the beautiful craters and crater lakes are simply breathtaking.
From this vantage point, you can see the majestic Rwenzori Mountains towering in the distance, along with Lake Edward, Lake George, and the expansive savannah below. The sight of large herds of elephants and buffaloes adds to the allure of this incredible landscape. TWA Airlines once featured this stunning view in a 1950s poster promoting travel to Uganda, and it’s easy to see why!

Day 2 – Queen Elizabeth Park
Kyambura Gorge Hike
After a restful night, wake up to the sounds of nature and prepare for a day filled with adventure. Start your morning with a hike into Kyambura Gorge, often referred to as “the Lost Gorge.” This lush, underground forest is teeming with life, and as you walk the trails, you’ll encounter a rich diversity of flora and fauna.
Cross the River of the Blind, where the sound of hooting chimpanzees fills the air, heightening the sense of adventure. Guided by a knowledgeable Uganda Wildlife Authority Ranger, you’ll learn about the gorge’s history, its legends, and the unique ecosystem that thrives here.
The hike takes about three hours, and you’ll have opportunities to spot primates, vibrant birds, butterflies, and various plants along the way. Most visitors find the trek enriching and transformative, connecting them to the heart of Uganda’s natural beauty.
Game Drive on the Kasenyi Plains
In the mid-afternoon, set out for an exhilarating game drive on the Kasenyi Plains. Your guides—your knowledgeable driver and a Uganda Wildlife Authority Ranger—will lead you through this stunning savannah, dotted with euphorbia trees and teeming with wildlife.
This area is known for its thriving populations of lions, leopards, and elephants, along with large herds of buffaloes. Expect to see Uganda kobs grazing in the grasslands, and keep an eye out for warthogs and bush pigs as you traverse this rich habitat. The backdrop of the Rwenzori Mountains creates a stunning vista that enhances the beauty of your safari experience.
After an exciting day of wildlife encounters, return to Kyambura Gorge Lodge for a traditional safari sundowner. This practice dates back to the colonial days of Africa, where British travelers enjoyed gin and tonic to ward off malaria while watching the sun dip below the horizon. Today, any drink will do, but the tradition remains a cherished part of the safari experience.
