Learn about the ways of the Chimpanzees.
Discover the Fascinating Lives of Our Closest Cousins, the Adorable Chimpanzees: If you’re planning a chimpanzee trek in Uganda, learning about these amazing creatures will enhance your experience. Uganda is home to thousands of chimpanzees, which have been studied closely in areas such as Kibale Forest, Budongo (where the Jane Goodall Foundation operates a research center), Kalinzu Forest, and Semliki. These chimpanzees live in large troops—sometimes consisting of over a hundred members—roaming the forests in search of fruits and leaves and occasionally hunting monkeys like the red-tailed variety.
You’ll often hear their loud, hooting calls before you see them. The chimpanzees you encounter have been habituated to humans—a process that can take years—so they are comfortable with your presence. By joining the Chimpanzee Habituation Experience, you can witness this fascinating process firsthand.
Chimpanzees are intelligent and social creatures. They communicate using gestures, sounds, and even employ tools. They also show empathy by caring for injured members of their troop, which is typically led by a strong alpha male. Learning about their world will make your trek unforgettable, revealing just how closely related these incredible animals are to us.

When is the Best Time of Year to track Chimpanzees?
Uganda experiences two dry seasons and two rainy seasons annually. The dry seasons, also known as the high seasons for tourism, span from June to October. The rainy seasons include the “Long Rains,” which occur in April, May, and part of June, and the “Short Rains,” which last from October to early December.
Unlike monsoon rains in Asia, Uganda’s rainfall typically lasts for only a short period. It usually falls at night or early in the morning, leaving sunny skies during the day. This allows locals to dry their clothes outside without needing electric dryers.
Some travelers actually prefer visiting during the rainy seasons because there are fewer tourists, lodges often offer lower rates, the landscape becomes lush and green, and wildlife sightings frequently increase. Visitors from rainy regions, such as the U.S. Northwest or Canada, may find the rainy season comfortable.
Chimpanzee trekking is available year-round. With the right gear, you can enjoy tracking chimpanzees in Uganda’s rainforests regardless of the weather.
Whether during the dry or wet season, Uganda offers unforgettable wildlife experiences and breathtaking natural scenery throughout the year.
What to wear while Chimpanzee Trekking:
Wear the right stuff during your Chimpanzee trek in Uganda. You are trekking in dense rainforests and need the right gear to be comfortable on or off the trail. A trek is not a stroll around your park back home.
Chimpanzee trekking is not as tricky as gorilla trekking but has its challenges. Kyambura Gorge begins with a steep trail down and back up and can be challenging for those who do not have a mid-level fitness level.
Here is a short list of what you must bring and Wear for your Chimpanzee Trek.
- Well-worn in Hiking Boots with n=wool socks
- Wear long trousers, not shorts, to protect you from insects and thorny underbrush.
- Long-Sleeved Shirt – again for your protection.
- A broad-brimmed Hat is best for protection from the sun.
- Pack a Poncho or Rain Jacket
- Waterproof Daypack containing camera, binoculars, snacks, and water.
- Use lots of insect repellent
- Use Sunblock lotion for protection.
You will be glad that you wore what we suggested after the Trek.
