The Kasyoha – Kitomi Forest Reserve is near Queen Elizabeth Park, south of the Kazinga Channel and Lake George. The Forest is a place of discovery – primates, birds, hiking trails, crater lakes, all off of the beaten tourist path, another one of those hidden gems found in the Pearl of Africa.
Hitting the Trail in Kasyoha – Kitomi Forest – There is the 3-hour hike to the Transparent Crater Lake, called Lake Kamunzuku where you can take a dip once you reach there.
If you are staying at the Nyanzibiri Eco-Community Camp it becomes an even longer hike and includes a boat ride.
This is an experiential Forest, it means hitting the trail, primate and bird watching, antelopes, forest elephants and forest buffaloes, forest hogs, bush pigs, at times animals enter the forest from Queen Elizabeth National Park.
For the avid Hiker and Birder, the Forest is a must visit place in Uganda.
Here you can explore 3-crater lakes including the twin lakes of Kyema and Kamweru plus the transparent lake called Kamunzuku. You can hike, canoe, visit an ancient and legendary cave in the area.
Birders will find the Kasyoha – Kitomi Forest a real find since there are a number of endemic species found here including the White-napped Pigeon, Coland Grey Parrot that are considered threatened. Kasyoha-Kitomi has one confirmed Albertine Rift endemic species, the Blue-headed Sunbird.
Other species include Afep Pigeon, Black Bee-eater, Blue-throated Brown Sunbird, Blue-throated Roller, Dusky Long-tailed Cuckoo, White-collared Olive-back, Cinnamon-breasted Bee-eater.
When it comes to elephants, forest elephants in particular are seen here, chimpanzees and L’hoest’s monkeys, baboons, colobus monkeys and others, bushpigs, antelopes of one kind or another can also be seen here.
The main things to do and see here are, hiking, including the waterfall trail, bird watching, canoeing, primate watching, swimming in the crater lakes, fishing, and this is a great spot for you to relax and chill out.
The best and longest hike here is a combination of canoeing and hiking from the Nyanzibiri Eco-Community Camp to Kasyoha – Kitomi Reserve and on to Lake Kamunzuku where you can have a picnic lunch, swim, before you return to starting point in the forest.
The forest is a refreshing change from the open savanna and visitors find it to be one of their favorite exploration places while on safari in Uganda.
Nyanzibiri Eco-Community Camp:
Nyanzibiri Eco-Community Camp is a very basic, rustic camp with just two bandas, it has excellent food, great TripAdvisor Reviews, it is however the magnificent setting of this Camp in the Western Albertine Rift with its 3 crater lakes, a historic cave that sets it apart.
Off of the Beaten Path it is a place of delight for the adventurous Hiker, great for birding, primates, village visits just south of Queen Elizabeth Park. A great place where to spend two days away from it all at the right price along with great food while you explore Kasyoha – Kitomi Reserve and the crater lakes found in the area.
