- Samuel and Florence Baker came to Uganda from Egypt through the Sudan into Uganda. They were the first Westerners to discover the most powerful waterfall in the world, Murchison Falls, after Sir Roderick Murchison, the then-president of the Royal Geographical Society. Ugandans from the Bunyoro kingdom had lived near the falls for centuries. The falls are also known as Kabalega Falls. Their Nile Boat Cruise almost came to a horrific end after an angry hippo overturned their boat. They were rescued by members of their party later in the day on the banks of the Nile.
- John Hanning Speke: He was the first European to see Lake Victoria and discover the source of the Nile. He traveled throughout modern-day Ugadnha.
- Henry Morton Stanley: He is the one that famously greeted the lost missionary explorer Dr. David Livingstone with the phrase, “Dr. Livingstone, I presume?” Gpong, through the park, was in search of Emin Pasha and his staff in northern Uganda who wanted to rescue Emin Pasha and his party, who were under siege from troops sent by the legendary Mahdi.
