Day 3 – Gorilla Tracking in the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest-
Today marks an extraordinary opportunity to encounter the mountain gorillas of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. To prepare for this once-in-a-lifetime experience, participants will begin their day with a hearty breakfast to ensure they are energized for the physically demanding trek ahead, which culminates in a unique opportunity to observe a family of mountain gorillas in their natural habitat.
Before embarking on the trek, participants will receive an essential orientation from a ranger affiliated with the Uganda Wildlife Authority. This session will cover critical information about gorilla behavior, safety protocols, and what to expect during the journey. Each participant will be assigned to a specific gorilla family, taking fitness levels into account. For those with mobility challenges, arrangements can be made for sedan chairs carried by porters.
When entering the forest, appropriate attire is crucial for comfort and safety. It is recommended to wear sturdy hiking boots with good ankle support to navigate the uneven terrain effectively. Long trousers, ideally tucked into socks, help protect against ants and thorny undergrowth, while long-sleeved, neutral-colored shirts can safeguard against insects and branches. A waterproof daypack is essential for carrying items such as a packed lunch, water, insect repellent, sunscreen, and a camera in a waterproof bag. Given the likelihood of rain in the rainforest environment, a rain jacket or poncho should also be included. Additionally, gloves can protect the hands, and a wide-brimmed hat provides shade.
Engaging a porter can significantly enhance the experience by alleviating the physical burden of carrying the pack while also supporting the local community. Porters will assist with difficult sections of the trail, allowing participants to focus on the experience itself. A walking stick will be provided for stability, along with a protective face mask and bottled water.
The highlight of the day is the gorilla encounter, during which participants will maintain a respectful distance of 10 meters from the gorillas. During the precious hour of observation, one can witness the natural behaviors of the family, including playful infants, protective silverbacks, and nurturing mothers. It is essential to capture these moments quietly and without sudden movements to ensure the gorillas remain comfortable.
After this enriching experience, participants will hike back to the trailhead, filled with wonder and appreciation for these magnificent animals. A driver-guide will then be on hand to transport everyone back to the lodge, allowing for reflection on the unforgettable moments shared with the gorillas.
