The Northern Bwamba Pass Mini-Hike in the Rwenzori Mountains of the Moon

Mountains on a Rwenzori Mountains of the Moon Mini-Hike Trail

The Rwenzori Mountains of the Moon Mini-Hike is what had been the most direct route between the small town of Bundibugyo on the border with the Democratic Republic of the Congo to Fort Portal in Uganda. This is not a trek for the queasy – it is a tough 1,500 to 3,000-meter high trek over what is the steep Northern Rwenzori Ridge which is known as Bwamba Pass.

The Trail takes you through isolated mountain villages where you meet the Bakonzo People, Bamboo Forests, and Afro-Montane vegetation all the while enjoying breathtaking views of the Rwenzori Mountains of the Moon and the Western Rift.

This off of the beaten path Mini-Hike opens up the Rwenzori Mountains to those that do not have the energy or time to climb the peaks of the mountains.

This Rwenzori Mini-Hike is easily combined with a visit to Semliki National Park and Wildlife Reserve, Kibale Forest, or Queen Elizabeth Park.

The Bwamba Pass Rwenzori Mountains of the Moon Mini-Hike:

The Bwamba Pass Trail you will be hiking on was the best way for people in the remote town of Bundibugyo on the border with the Congo to get to Fort Portal.  This was the most direct route in either direction before a road was built in 1938.

Today as you take this ancient footpath you will meet People still using this path today that uses this tough, 1,500-meter high trail that takes you through isolated Mountain Villages and Hamlets along the Way.

Hiking Trails take you to places that you cannot get to by road and so does the Rwenzori Mountains Bwamba Pass Mini-Hike that takes you through Bamboo Forest where you will be greeted by views of the Western Rift Valley, see primates, birds and mammals and most likely Chameleons including the colorful 3-horned Rhino Chameleon.

Your Guides are from the Abanya Community Group and the trail can begin near Fort Portal at the Kazingo UWA Trailhead or in Bundibugyo.  The Guides can give you insight into the local Bakonzo Community, the Keeper of the Rwenzori Mountains of the Moon, plus point out anything notable on the day that you trek.

What you need to wear and Bring:

Things that are a need for the Hike.  A daypack, a walking stick, 3 liters of water, packed lunch, snacks, and a Hiking Stick would be great – the services of a porter can be arranged and you will be glad that you did so later in the hike.

You will need waterproof hiking boots, long trousers, long-sleeved shirt, rain-jacket or poncho, hat, all things to protect you on the hike.  Others will wear shorts, t-shirts – protect yourself on this mini hike with the right clothing for the occasion.

Your lunch setting will be on a ridge with a view and views you will have on this 7 to 8-hour Hike which at this altitude can be strenuous.

This is a strenuous hike and not for the faint of heart and that is why you should have a porter along and it will help and assist a member of the Bakonzo People.

At the end of the Trail descend down into the town of Bundibugyo which is a small town on the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Our Suggestion about the Rwenzori Mountains Mini-Hike:

It is an 8-hour Hike and gives you a taste of the Rwenzori Mountain of the Moon.  It is not an easy hike, you do need to be physically fit to go on it.  We do not offer it as a Stand-Alone activity but a perfect add-on to your Safari in Uganda.

This is a perfect add on to a Safari that takes in Kibale Forest and Queen Elizabeth Park – It can add one or two-day to your safari.

That one day gives you a taste of the Rwenzori Mountains of the Moon.  It is like no other since it has been and still is used by locals living in the mountains.

It is off of the tourist path and it is doubtful that you will encounter any tourists on this trail while you are on it.
