Uganda has 2-Parks for Gorilla Trekking – Mgahinga Gorilla Park & Bwindi Impenetrable Forest
Uganda Gives You a Choice-Gorilla Trekking in the Virunga Volcanoes or in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest – 2 Gorilla Parks – Mgahinga Gorilla Park & Bwindi Forest
Uganda is the only country that gives you the choice of Gorilla Trekking in the Virunga Volcanoes or in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. In Uganda, you can trek Gorillas in two totally different Terrains, many track Gorillas in both and the cost of two permits comes out at less than one permit in Rwanda.
There is Mgahinga Gorilla Park with its three Virunga Volcanoes where Gorilla Trekking is like in Rwanda since Uganda and Rwanda share the same Volcanoes. The park gives you a time with the Gentle Giants of Forest without the Crowds since Mgahinga Gorilla Park is off of the beaten Tourist Path for most. Just like in Rwanda, you can trek Golden Monkeys in this park.
Secondly is the better known UNESCO World Heritage Site – Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, the other park where you can trek Gorillas in an ancient forest. Here there are more Gorilla Families that you can visit and more permits than any other country with Mountain Gorillas. The treks take place in 4 areas throughout the park, Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga, and Nkuringo. One can choose, easy, moderate or tough treks for that once in a lifetime encounter with a Gorilla Family.
Uganda gives you a choice -Gorilla Trekking in the Virunga Volcanoes or in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, or you can trek the Gentle Giants of the Forest twice in both Bwindi Impenetrable Forest and in Mgahinga Gorilla Park on the Virunga Volcanoes where the Silver meets the Gold, a reference to the Golden Monkeys and Silverback Gorillas. There are 880 plus endangering Mountain Gorillas remaining in Uganda, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo – 480 plus are found in Uganda. 400 plus in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest and 80 plus in Mgahinga Gorilla Park making Uganda the leading Mountain Gorilla Country in Africa. There is an instant benefit when you track Gorillas in Uganda and not Rwanda, an instant savings of 900 USD. Permits in Uganda are 600 USD and 1500 USD in Rwanda, a saving which certainly would help pay your Primate Safari in Uganda or the airfare to Africa.
Uganda gives you that exclusive Plus Experience when it comes to Gorilla Trekking. !500 USD in Uganda means not one hour with a Gorilla Family in the Forest, but 4 hours on the Gorilla Habituation Experience with a maximum of 4 participants, an all Day Trek which includes your hike into the Forest and out. This is a Uganda Exclusive Pilot Program that has been a success for all parties concerned and parts of your permit cost go to the excellent Gorilla Conservation Program and the local communities.
“Please Note: The Gorilla Habituation is not like a longer Gorilla Trek, something which many think it is. On a Gorilla, you observe, take pictures for one hour, on a Gorilla Habituation Experience you become an active participant in the process of Gorilla Habituation.”
Two Gorilla Trekking Parks in Uganda
Mgahinga Gorilla Park is not well-known by visitors coming for Primate Trekking, it is off the radar for most travelers. It, however, it is one of the Jewels among Parks in Uganda. It is a small park with many activities, things to do and see. It is off of the beaten Tourism Track and it is activities without the crowds, The Park includes 3 Virunga Volcanoes, Volcanoes where the other side of them is in Rwanda. The Gorilla Trekking conditions are identical to Rwanda and yet the permit Price for trekking is 900 USD less.
Mgahiga Gorilla Park is more than its name seems to indicate – it home to the largest Golden Monkey Population, an excellent spot for Virunga Volcano Climbs, and the best area for cultural interaction with the original people of the Forest, the Batwa People who were here first long before any Bantu people group arrived and lived in harmony with the Forest and the Gorillas.
Mgahinga Gorilla Park is a hikers paradise, filled with trails such as the Sabinyo Gorge and Border Trails where you can explore the diversity found in this park.
Beyond its borders is nearby Lake Mutanda where you paddle to one of the emerald Islands in a dugout canoe as in the distant past. Mgahinga – the other Gorilla Park in Uganda.
Bwindi Impenetrable Forest – the largest concentration of Mountain Gorillas in the World
Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, a UNESCO World Heritage, names as one of the best Parks in Africa by CNN, one of the Most unusual Honeymoon Destinations worldwide by Lonely Planet with its 400 plus Mountain Gorillas is a must destination for Primate Lovers. Bwindi Impenetrable Forest means more for Primate Lovers. It is the only park where both Mountain Gorillas and Chimpanzees are found, however for conservation reasons only Gorillas are tracked. This is an ancient Rainforest that survived platonic shift around it that created the Virunga Massif and other present geographical realities. This s the park with most habituated gorilla families and more gorilla permits. It is also the only gorilla park where you can be an active participant in the habituation process by taking part in the Gorilla Habituation Experience.
Bwindi Impenetrable Forest is also one of the best Birding spots in Africa, a great place for hikers and cultural interactions that you can participate in such as the Batwa Experience in the Buhoma area of the park.
Access to Gorilla Trekking in the Virunga Volcanoes or in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest is not as hard as you might have been led to believe. Just because the parks are in Uganda does not mean you have to fly into Uganda to trek Gorillas here. Drive-Time from Entebbe, Uganda to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest and Mgahinga Gorilla Park is 8 hours, but there is a more practical alternative.
We have popularized Fly into Rwanda and Trek Gorillas in Uganda. Kigali, which is your gateway to Southwest Uganda where the Gorillas are found is just a 3 hour plus drive to Mgahinga Gorilla Park and 4 hours to the Rushaga area of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest.
You can also fly into Entebbe and take the Aerolink Airlines Gorilla Express Flight to either the north or southern end of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. It is just a 1 1/2 hour flight and we will meet you as you land. The other way of reaching here is an extended safari that begins in Entebbe or Kigali and you fly out the other airport at the end of your safari.
