Spend a half a day in Volcanoes National Park – Rwanda tracking the Golden Monkeys


 Golden Monkey Trekking – Golden Monkeys are found in the high altitude Bamboo Forests of Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda.  Like the Mountain Gorillas of Volcanoes National Park, the Golden Monkeys are habituated, meaning that they are used to human beings and will not scamper off when approached by visitors.

The Golden Monkey are a subspecies of he Sykes Monkey which is also known as the “Blue Monkey and found in the bamboo forests of the Virunga Volcanoes as in Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda and Mgahinga Gorilla Park in Uganda.

Golden Monkeys are playful, nosy and flit around in the Bamboo Forest in a most playful manner that proves to delight those who have come to track and observe them.

There are two habituated Golden Monkey Groups presently that can be tracked in Volcanoes National Park ranging up to 100 members in each group, which is quite a sight to behold when you are up close to them.

In recent years more and more visitors that come to track the Mountain Gorillas also take the time for Golden Monkey Trekking in Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda.

The Golden Monkey trek begins at Volcanoes National Park’s Kinigi Headquarters at 7 am in the morning.  The cost for a permit is 100 usd per person. As to what to wear- it is best to wear long trousers, long-sleeved shirt, hat, light-rain-jacket or poncho, waterproof hiking boots, a waterproof daypack, with some snacks such as granola bars, enough bottled water and camera equipment.

The services of porter can be engaged to assist you with your daypack and free you to take pictures of the golden monkeys in their habitat.
