Take thia 8 day Gorilla – Chimpanzee Trekking – Cultural Safari in Rwanda where you will see some of Rwanda’s great cultural sites, trek Chimpanzees, Gorillas and other Primates, relax and chill out along Lake Kivu – 8 compact days in the heart of Africa – Rwanda.

Day 1: Arrive in Rwanda – des Mille Collines Hotel:

Arrival Information:  Your Visa Information for Rwanda is found here.  Yellow Fever Immunization Certificate is required – best to get it 30 days prior to arrival.

Arrive at Kigali International Airport and be met our Driver-Guide – who will introduce you to the land of a thousand hills and a million smiles.

Activities for this day depend on your arrival time – often travelers from North America and Europe will arrive late at night when it is too late for activities.

We drive to the hotel that you choose, there is the upmarket des Mille Collines and the budget-moderate Heaven Botique Hotel – both are 20 minutes from the airport.  Great food can be ordered in both hotels if you arrive in the afternoon and dinner will be needed.

Day 2: Drive to Nyungwe Forest National Park:

 Breakfast  and your 8 day Gorilla – Chimpanzee Trekking – Cultural Safari in Rwanda begins as we are off for Nyungwe Forest National Park stopping at various places that are of interest such as the traditional Palace of Rwanda’s Royalty – the King’s Palace (Mwami’s Palace) The palace and King’s Hut have been reconstructed to their 19th century state.

In Butare – Huye we visit the Cultural Museum which is filled with many images and examples of Rwandan culture and geography. The Museum is considered one of the best ethnographic museums in East Africa and it will give you much insight into Rwanda’s cultural history.

You will visit the National Museum in Huye which is one of the finest ethnographic museum of East Africa. It is a good source of information on the cultural history of Rwanda and the region.

Once we conclude the museum visit at Butare we will have the privilege of a grand performance of an Intore Dance Group doing a traditional Intore Dance.  The Urungangazi Group is considered one of Rwanda’s finest Dance performance Troupes and proves to be a delight to visitors.

Lunch in Butare, and after lunch we proceed to Nyungwe Forest National Park – on the way we stop for a visit to the Tinnery of Huye where you will find pewter craft being made and sold – skills learned by the craftsman in Europe and now artistic pieces being created in Rwanda with an African – Rwandan touch.

In the afternoon after driving along scenic roads through some of the tea-fields that abound in Rwanda we reach Nyungwe Forest where we check into the upmarket Nyungwe Forest Lodge or the moderately priced Nyunge Top View Hill Hotel.

Nyungwe Forest Lodge is an up-market lodge overlooking Nyungwe Forest with lovely rooms with bath.  There is a swimming pool for your enjoyment – the views from here are breathtaking.  Sunset in Rwanda is around 6 pm – enjoy it over the ancient Nyungwe Montane Forest.

 Day 3 – Nyungwe Forest National Park – Chimpanzee Trekking – Forest Canopy Walk:

Early Breakfast

Chimpanzee Tracking  – the length of the Chimpanzee Trek depends on where the Chimpanzees are on that day since they mov e daily in search for food and also  build new nests each day where they spend the night.

Nyungwe Forest Park is home to 13 different species of Primates which is like 25% of all primates found in Africa including very large groups of Colobus Monkeys that will number of 200 in a group.

Proper clothing for trekking is recommended – you will need a Daypack – Hiking Boots, Long Trousers, Long-Sleeved Shirt, light Rain-Jacket, Wide-Brimmed Hat is good. Bottled Water – at least one liter should be with you – some snacks will come in handy at times if the track proves to be of length.

The length of chimpanzee trek varies with the location of the chimpanzees but seeing and observing them is most rewarding and is worth the effort of tracking them.


During the afternoon it is off to East Africa’s only Forest  Canopy Walk.  This is a most exciting adventure and begins with a hike to the first tower of the Canopy Walk and you see the canopy walk from below

Once you climb up – you will find yourself high up above a forest valley ( 40 to 50 meters from the forest floor) and you will get to view the Forest in a manner rarely seen.  From your above the tree-top vantage you can see the primates in the trees, birds, butterflies.  Simply an unforgettable experience high above the forest floor.

This like all other walks, hikes, treks at Nyungwe Forest is a guided walk where you are assisted by a ranger from the Park who will explain all that is before you on while on the walk – you will get to see the forest from above and from below and experience the ancient Afro – montane Forest in a most unusual way that will leave lasting memories beside some great and unusual pictures.

 Day 4 – Nyungwe Forest National Park:


 Morning Colobus Monkey Trek.  There may be over 200 to 300 Angolan Col0bus found in a group. Quite a sight to say the least and quite a chatter and lots to watch as the Colobus Monkeys flit around in the tree-tops of Nyungwe Forest.

Besides the monkeys – there is other flora and fauna found in the largest high altitude rainforest in East Africa that contains 25 % of all African Primates some of which you might see on this morning.  There are of course also the trees, the flowers such as the large varieties of orchids found here and more.


Afternoon guided forest walk – there are countless of trails found here including ” the Source of the Nile Trail.”  For birders Nyungwe Forest is heaven on earth with 275 species found here – many of them being endemic species to the area.

Day 5 – Lake Kivu – Relax – Chill Out:

 After breakfast we shift to scenic Lake Kivu where we check into the exclusive Lake Kivu Serena Hotel.  The Lake Kivu Serena Hotel has its own sandy, private beach along the scenic lake.

The garden is simply fabulous and provides along with the pool and lake the perfect setting to relax and chill out along Lake Kivu.  It is close to the lakeside resort town of Gisenyi, the area is best known for its scenic, sandy shores.

Hotel rooms have a private balcony overlooking the lake providing a relaxing place to simply be and read a good book for the afternoon.

Activities include, swimming, boating, wind-surfing, walks, a visit to the hotel Health center or simply having an excellent meal with a view.

The moderate budget choice that represents real value is the Waterfront Resort.  Right on Lake  Kivu – great African style stone cottages with an open bathroom in back, flowers, rocks, quite unusual.

The view of the lake is great here, the food is up to most people’s standards and lots of things to do and see besides relaxing and chilling out for the rest of the day.

You can swim in the lake, it is bilharzia free, you can try some of the delicious Sambaza Lake Sardines, or the national dish of Rwanda – brochettes – the ones that Rwandans prefer are goat brochettes, but you can have beef, chicken and even vegetarian ones in some places.

Waterfront Lake Resort is a great moderately priced, value plus lodge, perfect for those wanting a break from the safari.

Day 6 – Volcanoes National Park – Mountain Gorilla View Lodge:

Breakfast and relax around the lake and take a morning boat ride or any other activity at Lake Kivu  Serena that we will arrange for you. Optional – not included in price since there are too many choices.


Depart – taking the most scenic drive to Volcanoes National Park checking into the lodge that you have chosen near the park.  There are many choices from budget to luxury lodges near Volcanoes National Park.

Enjoy yourself in the shadows of the Virunga Volcanoes of Rwanda – the sunset here comes early – near 6 pm – find a quiet spot with a cool drink and enjoy.

 Day 7 – Volcanoes National Park – Gorilla  Trekking:

Early Breakfast and pick up a packed lunch, take two liters of water with you – have a daypack, what to  wear – long-trousers, long-sleeved shirt, sturdy – well worn hiking boots, a wide brimmed hat, gardening gloves may come in handy to pull yourself up on vines, branches, light rain-jacket and a few snack may come in handy.  A Porter can be arranged and is suggested – also a walking stick which can be obtained here.

During the pleasant gorilla briefing with coffee, tea, Intore Dance you are assigned to a gorilla group that befits your level of fitness and soon you will be off for your trek up the volcanoes.

The scenic views along the trek will be most breathtaking and you might see mammals, primates, birds, butterflies along the way.

The gorilla trekking experience can last from a few hours to an all-day experience in the shadows of the volcanoes – all depending on where your gorilla group is located on that day since they move each day to a new location.

That one hour in the presence of the Mountain Gorillas of Rwanda is worth the effort, the money and the distance traveled here and they all diminish in the presence of the Mountain Gorillas.

Day 8 – Kigali City Tour And Departure from Kigali International Airport:

 Breakfast and we depart for Kigali where depending on your departure time of the day we fit in a city tour of Africa’s cleanest city – Kigali.

A must is one of Rwanda’s Sacred Places – the Gisozi Genocide Memorial Center – lunch Heaven’s Restaurant overlooking the city and known for its excellent food.

Purchase some Rwandan Souvenirs to take home and be sure to pick up some Rwandan Coffee and Tea.

Other places of interest will be added on the city tour – time permitting – day-room can also be arranged for your convenience.
