5-Day-Luxury Twice Gorilla Trekking Safari where you Mgahinga Gorilla Park where you track Gorillas in the Virunga Volcanoes and one of the Best Parks in Africa, the UNESCO World Heritage Site Bwindi Impenetrable Forest which was named by CNN in 2017 as being one of the best parks in Africa.  

This one-of-a-kind-gives you two different Trekking Experiences, tracking in the Virunga Volcanoes and in the Ancient Rainforest of Bwindi.

You cannot do this in either Rwanda or the Democratic Republic of the Congo, only in Uganda can you get two distinctly different trekking experiences in Uganda.  Trekking Gorillas in the Virunga Volcanoes and in the ancient Rainforest of Bwindi.

Day 1 – Journey to Mgahinga Park:

Your 5-Day-Twice Gorilla Trekking Safari begins as we pick you up at your Hotel in Kigali Rwanda at 7:00 am and begin the 3-hour journey to Mgahinga Park.  This includes the border crossing.

You will need an East African Visa that is obtainable from the first East African Country that you Visit (Kenya-Rwanda – Uganda are participants in the East African Visa Program).  You will also need a Yellow Fever Certificate.  Change your watches to one-hour backward since Uganda is on East African Time.

Other ways of getting here:  You can fly in from Entebbe to Kisoro, drive to the park from Kampala or Entebbe. Include the Park on a longer safari including a Uganda Rwanda combined Safari.

4-Day-Twice Gorilla Trekking SafariDay 2- Gorilla Trekking

An early Breakfast – the right equipment and clothing for your Trek. Further Trekking Information that will make this day a Success is found here.  We suggest a day pack, packed lunch from the lodge, two liters of water, long trousers, long sleeved shirt, hat, boots, thick socks and tough gardening gloves.  All this is not for a fashion statement but your protection against nettles, thorns, brush,

After the orientation, pick a porter and a walking Stick – the best investment you can make on this day and off you go on your Safe and Secure Gorilla Trek with Rangers and security escort to visit the Nyakagezi Family – 9 members in the group.  This is a 4 to 5-hour trek for most, a-one-of-a-kind experience.

After the Gorilla Trek, we drive to the Southern Area of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest – 1 1/2 drive time due to road conditions. Here you check into the upmarket Lodge you have chosen for the next two nights

Day 3- Golden Monkey Trekking 


Golden Monkey Trekking:  

You embark on your Golden Trek with Uganda Wildlife Authority Rangers.  This is a hike up on the sides of the Virunga Volcanoes in Mgahinga Gorilla Park to the Bamboo Forest.  There are several thousand of the endangered Golden Monkeys found in the park.  They are beautiful and colorful monkeys, weigh about 30  pounds when mature and some of the liveliest monkeys you have ever come across.

The group you are trekking will be about 100 in size but you do not have time to count them since they are always on the move.

The trek is about 4 hours long after which you return to Mount Gahinga Lodge, the only luxury lodge near the park where you can enjoy views of Mount Gahinga and even Lake Mutanda in the Distance.

After the Golden Monkey Trek, we drive to the Rusjaga area of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest and you can check into Gorilla Safari Lodge or the Exclusive Clouds Mountain Gorilla Lodge.  Drive-Time is 1 1/2 hours depending on road conditions.

From here you can see both the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest below and the Virunga Volcanoes.

There is one Family Cottage with two bedrooms and two bathrooms that will sleep 4.

The Lodge is close to the Nkuringo Trailhead but 45 minutes from the Rushaga area.

Gorilla Safari Lodge – Upmarket:

The upmarket Gorilla Safari Lodge – quality and comfort in the Rushaga Area of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest,

It is the only up-market Lodge in the Rushaga Area at an affordable price and a great place near the park headquarters from where you can track gorillas or spend 4 hours with them on a Gorilla Habituation Experience.

Each cottage comes with a bath and a fireplace to take the chill off of those colder Bwindi Nights.  It is a short ride to the trailhead in Rushaga from here.

There is one Family Cottage that has two bedrooms and where 4 can stay together.

The Lodge has gone through a facelift in the Spring of 2018,

We use this lodge extensively for our upmarket Clients since it is the only upmarket lodge in the Rushaga Area.

Day 4 – Bwindi Impenetrable Forest Gorilla Trekking – Rushaga or Nkuringo:

Breakfast and you are off for your second Trek – 45 minutes to 1 hour scenic Drive – this one will be either in the Nkuringo or Rushaga Area of the Park.   The Nkuringo Group is the toughest group to trek in this part of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest.  There are easier treks that can be taken that cover an easier terrain and are shorter in length.

The routine and clothing are the same as it was for your first trek. The porter that you use will be different as will be the group that you will track.

Trekking is different in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest – it can mean going up and down on trails until you meet your group.  The experience, however, is the same as in Mgahinga Gorilla Park.

Exclusive Option:  Instead of one hour with a family you can be for four hours family on a Gorilla Habituation Experience.  The Permit Cost is 1500 USD.  This is a pilot program in Uganda, there are only 4 visitors allowed per group and it is an all-day trek.

Day 5 – Return to Kigali


Buniga Forest Walk with the Batwa Pygmies:

The Batwa Pygmies were the first people of the Rainforest living in harmony with nature for thousands of years.  They were hunters and gatherers only taking what they needed from the forest leaving a low, ecological Footprint behind them.

When the parks were formed, they were evicted from their beloved forest.  The Forest Walk is one opportunity for them to keep their culture, their traditions, their ways alive and passing them on to the next generation.

This is an interactive forest walk that allows you to see the forest through the eyes of the first people of the Forest.
