Murchison Falls Wildlife – Kibale Forest Chimpanzee Trekking Safari

This 5-Day Budget or Moderately Priced Safari combines the best of Murchison Falls Park with  its wildlife,the River Nile and the most powerful waterfall in the world – Murchison Falls.

This safari becomes a Big-5 Safari with the added visit to Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary where you track Rhinos on foot and Kibale Forest Chimpanzee Trekking or the all-day Chimpanzee Habituation Experience.  We also visit Bigodi Wetlands Sanctuary where you take a guided hike in a Jungle Swamp.

Combine Murchison Falls Park which is the best all-around wildlife park within reasonable driving distance from Kampala and Kibale Forest which is the best park in East Africa for Chimpanzee Trekking or the Chimpanzee Habituation Experience.

Day 1 – Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary – Murchison Falls Park:

Depart your hotel or lodging in Kampala at 6:30 beating the Kampala traffic jams as we head for  Murchison Falls National Park.  The drive will be through the evergreen Ugandan countryside.  Small villages and towns along the way, gardens, small farms will come into view along with villages

Our first stop on our 5-Day Murchison Falls Wildlife – Kibale Forest Chimpanzee Trekking Safari is at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary where we pick up a Ranger-Guide for the Rhino Trek on  foot with some great opportunities for photos of the Rhinos.

After the Rhino Trek we continue our drive through the town of Masindi and on to Murchison Falls.  We cross the River Nile and check into the lodge you have chosen.  Murchison Falls Park has many choices from Budget to Luxury


Late Afternoon Game Drive.  On the game drive a Uganda Wildlife Authority Wildlife Ranger joins us,  he along with your driver-guide can point out animals, birds, trees, plants that you might otherwise miss along the way.

The vehicle is equipped with pop-up roof in order that you can stand and see the animals better.

This afternoon you have a great opportunity to see lions, at times leopards, elephants, buffaloes, giraffes, monitor lizards, antelopes such as the Uganda Kob and others and savanna and water birds of all kinds.

The sight of 50 endangered Rothschild Giraffes meandering through the Savanna is simply awesome and there are over 1000 here – the largest population of Rothschild Giraffes in the African Wild.

 Paraa Lodge – Upmarket: 

Upmarket Lodging on the wildlife side of the park.  It is has often been said that Paraa Lodge is located in the best spot in the park when it comes to location.

You have choice of standard rooms, rooms with AC, Suite, Tented Cottage and the Queen’s Cottage that sleeps 4 and is close to the River Nile.

The Food and Service is great here and you will love having dinner overlooking the Nile, the Breakfast is quite a spread here.

 Fort Murchison – Moderate – Budget:

Fort Murchison is a lodge we have used since its inception and our clients have been very satisfied staying there, either in the moderate, spacious rooms with bath and view or the budget Furnished Tents with thatched roof and an outside sitting area and shared bath.

Solar lights throughout.  The food and service are good here for a moderate and budget lodge.

Day 2 – Murchison Falls Park:

 Breakfast first or breakfast after the early morning game drive – early morning game drives can begin at 6:30 am which is at the crack of dawn –sunrise is about 6:45 am and this is one of the best times to be on a game drive on the Borassus palm studded savanna which is unique when it comes to East African Wildlife Park.

Morning time means that the predators return from their nightly prowl and hunt and often you can see lions, leopards, other cats return from the night’s hunt on the savanna.  At times there is a morning mist as the sun rises providing a different photo opportunity.  The lighting is better for taking photos than the prime of day, you also have an open pop-up roof where you can stand and take better pictures.

Murchison Falls is one of the best all-around wildlife Parks in Uganda and gives you its best each time you venture out on a game drive.

 3 pm – Afternoon Nile River Wildlife Safari up the Nile to the falls. This  is one of the favorite activities of visitors to Uganda, it is certainly most rewarding.  Elephants, at times Lions, Buffaloes, hippos frolicking the in the water, crocodiles awaiting a tasty dish waiting on the shore, especially just below the falls where they are on a sandbank waiting for some morsel to tumble-down the falls.

At the bottom of the falls, an experience in itself.  You disembark and take a guided hike up the side of the falls.  You will feel the spray of the powerful falls on you and it was an exciting climb up.  On top, take a breather and look around.  Take a walk  toward the where you can see the front of the falls and get pictures of the rainbow that is always there.

Your driver will meet you on top of the falls for the return to Fort Murchison and another lovely dinner in the wilderness.

Day 3 – Drive to Kibale Forest:

 Breakfast and we depart for Kibale Forest crossing the Nile at 7 am.  A tropical forest that is a jungle and has so many great surprises in store for you.  The journey is a pleasant one through various regions of Uganda.  We will take the scenic route to Kibale so you get to see Lake Albert and the scenic Rift Valley

Option:  Add on a 6th day and stop halfway to Kibale Forest exploring Kabwoya Wildlife Reserve staying overnight Lake Albert Lodge.  There are lots of things to do and see here including fishing for Nile Perch, nature walks, horseback riding Safaris, bush-dinners to name a few.

Late afternoon arrival at Kibale Forest which is the best park in East Africa for chimpanzee trekking and the all day Chimpanzee Habituation Experience (CHEX).

This exquisite Lodge is 4e5 minutes from Kibale Forest but that is well worth the drive.  Private Cottages overlooking a crater lake, a great swimming pool with a view.  The lodge and cottages are decorated with superb art, the food is something people rave about.

This is only lodge of its kind with a classy European cuisine that has an African Twist to it. Papaya Lake Lodge is a one of a kind lodge in Uganda.

Day 4- Kibale Forest Chimpanzee Trekking:

Option:  Instead of spending one hour with the chimpanzees of Kibale Forest – you can spend all day with them in a Chimpanzee Habituation Experience.  This begins early in the morning and lasts until late afternoon.  You are with researchers, trackers and guides as you observe a chimpanzee group being habituated.

Breakfast at Kibale Forest Camp and off to Kibale Forest Headquarters for Chimpanzee Tracking.  This is a guided walk and with 13 primates in the park, one usually finds at least 5 or six different types of primates.

You will need to be properly dressed and have the right equipment on you.

Then there is the forest itself with its beauty and ruggedness.  Butterflies and exotic birds abound in this park and the tracking experience takes in a lot more than Chimpanzee tracking, there is the beautiful and inspiring natural setting that is haven for wildlife, birds,  plants and trees.

The chimpanzees you will encounter are habituated meaning that they are used to human beings.  Not all chimpanzees in the park are habituated.  The process takes up to two years.

Afternoon Walk at Bigodi Swamp Wetlands which is next to Kibale Forest and you just might see chimpanzees again and of course lots of birds are found there including the the Large Blue Turaco.

Bigodi Wetlands Sanctuary is a community project that has been put together quite well and entrance and guide fees benefit the local community.

Optional Nocturnal Walk in Kibale Forest: This is simply an awesome experience.  You are guided through Kibale Forest by Uganda Wildlife Authority Guides and there are spotlights.  Bushbabies and Pottos are often found with their big eyes and other nocturnal animals.

Day 5 – Top of the World Hike – Return to Kampala:

Breakfast in the jungle at Kibale Forest Tented Camp.  Then off  for the top of the world hike where you pass by three crater lakes, pass through Tea Plantations, quaint villages and settlement, as you reach the top of the world area the views are simply breathtaking – the Rwenzori Mountains of the Moon – Queen Elizabeth park, the greater local area including the crater lakes before you – it is simply worth the 3 hour nature walk and hike.  you do have a guide to point out things to you, explain and enlighten.

Lunch at Kibale Forest Camp.

Depart for Kampala and arrive around the early evening hours.
