Day 2 – First Gorilla Tracking-Volcanoes National Park – Rwanda:

Early Morning Breakfast and we are off to park headquarter for the gorilla trek briefing, a cup of Rwandan coffee or tea and some delightful Intore dance performed for you.

You will need a daypack, a packed lunch from the lodge that is provided, two liters of water.  Clothing – long trousers, long-sleeved shirt, light rain-jacket, hat with wide brim, gardening gloves to pull yourself up on branches, hiking boots with good traction and that are worn in.

You want your skin covered to protect against scratches from branches, stings from nettles, insects and more.  Often people simply dress wrong going gorilla tracking in Rwanda or Uganda.

You will be assigned to a gorilla group to trek and you are off with your guides and trackers.  For up-market safaris, we supply a porter to carry your things and to keep your hands free to take pictures.

The gorilla trek itself is between 3 and 5 hours or longer – it is well worth it and it is the experience of a lifetime for you.  Simply a most amazing and most memorable experience and you will that experience twice, in two different countries and locations.

After the trek – time permitting – there is an optional village visit at Iby’ Iwacu Cultural village which is a great place to get a cultural insight into Rwandan life. Please note that you have to let us know whether you would like to visit the village since we have to book it.

Lodging – up-market:  Mountain Gorilla View Lodge

Meal Plan: Breakfast – Lunch – Dinner

Day 3 – Golden Monkey tracking or Dian Fossey Karisoke Research Center – transfer to Uganda:

Breakfast and this morning you have a choice – Golden Monkey Tracking in the Bamboo Forest of the Virunga Volcanoes – this is quite an exciting time with the lively golden monkeys – whose color and coat make them quite beautiful to behold up close in the Forest.

Like the Mountain Gorillas – the golden monkeys are habituated and are used to the presence of humans.  This is a guided hike with trackers and guides and is about 3 to four hours in length returning in time for lunch at the lodge.

The other choice you have is to hike up and see the ruins of the Karisoke Research Center that Dian Fossey established here in Rwanda during her long stay in the country during which she was a spokesperson and advocate for the conservation of the endangered Mountain Gorillas.  She protected the gorillas against poachers and others that wanted to encroach on the habitat of the mountain gorillas of Rwanda.  At the end of the day she paid the maximum price – her life was taken as she was murdered.

Lunch and after Lunch we drive across the border into Uganda – we set our clocks forward by one hour to Eastern African Time.  We are headed for the exclusive up-market Chameleon Hill Lodge on a ridge overlooking Lake Mutanda and the Virunga Volcanoes, studded with emerald islands, the perfect setting for an African scenic sunset.

Chameleon Hill lodge is unlike any other safari lodge in Africa – it is combination castle with an African flair, the inner reflections of an eccentric (definition of eccentric – a person who is uniquely themselves).  Simply a most unique lodge in a fairyland setting of volcanoes, a lake that is at times covered with an almost mystical fog.

The view here is worth the overnight stay at Chameleon Hill Lodge.  Open the doors of your cottage – have a seat – a glass of wine and take in the splendid view before you.

Rooms are elegantly furnished, hot water is plentiful – food is superb – welcome to Uganda – the Pearl of Africa.

Lodging – up-market:  Chameleon Hill Lodge  other lodges in the southern area of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest

Other Upmarket Choices are – Clouds Mountain Gorilla Lodge, Bwindi Gorilla Lodge Nkuringo, Gorilla Safari Lodge in Rushaga.

Day 4: Uganda Gorilla Tracking – Bwindi Impenetrable Forest:

Option: You have the option to be with a Mountain Gorilla Group for 4 hours in the Rushaga area of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest on a Gorilla Habituation Experience with Researchers.

An early breakfast and we are off to Nkuringo or Rushaga for Gorilla Tracking.  The Nkuringo Gorilla Group is the toughest group to track in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest since the journey begins with 600 meters down at the beginning of the trek and 600 meters up. There are however easier groups to track in the area and there are 5 habituated gorilla groups for visitors in the area.

The clothing and equipment are the same as in Rwanda and a porter will be available for you to carry your things.  This is a win-win, you have freedom of hands and the Ugandan has a family income.

The second gorilla trek is again three to five hours long and once again you have one hour with the gorilla family – the second great primate adventure in Africa for you.

Time permitting – sunset lake cruise on Lake Mutanda.

Lunch in Kisoro at Travelers Rest Hotel – which was Dian Fossey’s home away from home.  At that time it was owned by Walter Baumgaertel who is considered the father of Ugandan Gorilla Tourism.
