The Best all-around 5 day Mountain Gorilla – Chimpanzee Trekking – Wildlife Safari
Day 1- Bwindi Impenetrable Forest:
You can start this safari in Kigali and take the 3-hour journey to Rushaga where you track Gorillas at 600 USD permit price.
We stop for lunch
We reach the Buhoma Area of Bwindi Impenetrable where we check into the lodge that you have chosen according to your preferences
Note: Where in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest we get your permits determines the lodges that you can choose from. Permits for Gorilla Trekking are issued on a regional basis, such as in Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga, and Nkuringo. In Uganda, there is no central Tracking Headquarters, but regional ones by area.
Lodging is normally higher than at other Uganda Wildlife and Primate National Parks reflecting the thought that if someone can partake in the most expensive Tourist Activity in Africa, they can also pay a bit extra on lodging. Do note that normal Gorilla Trekking Permits in Uganda are 600 USD and not 1,500 USD as in Rwanda.
Meal Plan: Lunch – Dinner
Day 2 – Gorilla Tracking – Bwindi Impenetrable Forest:
A Gorilla Trek, for most, it is the experience of a lifetime. Normally it takes about 5 hours and can be a bit on the rigorous side. We consider your input and place you with a Gorilla Family Group where the past tracking is the kind that you wish for.
What to wear: It is best to wear jeans, a long-sleeved shirt, boots, a hat, some use garden gloves to pull themselves up on vines or branches, light rain jacket, day pack.
You can hire a porter ( small extra Cost) and you help a Ugandan family. You can also buy a tall walking stick that comes in handy for most Mountain Gorilla Trekkers.
The Mountain Gorilla Trek can take 5 hours or more, that includes one hour of being with a Gorilla family. There are rules of conduct while tracking the gorillas and they need to be followed for the protection of the Mountain Gorillas and for your well-being.
Optional Activities not included in Price: After tracking there are choices in regards to activities, you can relax chill out or take Buhoma Village Walk, you can also take a Ride – 4 a Woman Mountain Bike Ride –a visit with the Batwa People.
Instead of Gorilla Trekking where you spend one hour with a Gorilla Family, you can take part in an all-day Gorilla Habituation Experience where you spend 4 hours with a Gorilla Family plus the trek in and out. Permit Fees are 1500 USD instead of 600 USD for Gorilla Trekking. This takes place in the Rushaga area of Bwindi and your lodging would be adjusted accordingly to the Rushaga Area.
Meal Plan: Breakfast – Lunch – Dinner
Day 3 – Ishasha – Queen Elizabeth Park:
Breakfast and we leave for Queen Elizabeth Park, 1½ hours later we reach the Ishasha region, this is the home of the Tree Climbing Lions actually, is the best place in East-Africa to see them.
From the Buhoma Area, it is a 1 1/2 hour Drive
We take a game drive with a Uganda Wildlife Authority Ranger. The Safari Vehicle has a pop-up roof for better game viewing. Not only will you most likely see Tree Climbing Lions, but also leopards, herds of elephants, buffaloes, Uganda Kob and Topi Antelopes.
Lunch at Savanna Resort
We continue to the Mweya area of Queen Elizabeth Park and before checking into the lodge of choice we take the 27-kilometer explosion crater drive.
This is a most scenic drive at the highest point of Queen Elizabeth Park. See the Rwenzori Mountains of the Moon, Explosion craters, some filled with water, some containing salt, other covered by savanna grass or forest. So scenic that National Geographic featured a picture of one the explosion craters recently. There is also the view of the Western Rift escarpment which is part of the Western Rift and the Savannah below.
Continue to the Lodge you have chosen.
Meal Plan: Breakfast – Lunch -Dinner
Day 4 – Queen Elizabeth Park:
Breakfast and we drive to the Kyambura Gorge for Chimpanzee Tracking. The Kyambura Gorge is part of the Western Rift and as you come near it, you will find this huge gash in the Savannah, that gash in the Kyambura Gorge, part of the Western Rift.
After an orientation, you go out with guides and trackers to track our closest cousins, the chimpanzees.
Like the gorillas, they are habituated which means that they are used to human beings and do not scamper off when we show up in their area.
Again, like with Gorilla Tracking, chimpanzee tracking is another one of a kind encounter.
One hour with the chimpanzees of Kyambura Gorge another amazing experience in your five days on Safari in the Pearl of Africa.
Option: Chimpanzee Trekking can be done in nearby Kalinzu Forest where the chances of spotting chimpanzees are much higher. Japanese Primate Researchers have been habituating the chimpanzees for over 20 years. In 2017 spotting Chimpanzees became iffier in Kyambura Gorge causing, many of our clients to trek chimpanzees in Kalinzu Forest.
Afternoon a wildlife boat safari on Kazinga Channel at 3 pm. The boat will be moving along the banks of the channel toward Lake Edward where you will see the largest concentration of hippos in Africa, hundreds of birds and normally a bird watcher will see over 40 species of birds on the two-hour boat safari – herds of elephants coming down to water, larger herds during the dry season, buffalo herds and late in the afternoon you find an occasional predator coming to water before going out on a night’s hunt.
The boat safari is a slow-moving affair so that you get the best opportunities for taking pictures – the boat safari is one of the highlights of your visit to Queen Elizabeth National Park which is a tapestry of Natural wonders that you will find most amazing.
Meal Plan: Breakfast – Lunch – Dinner
