Hitting the Trail – The Experiential 3 day Mahoma Trail Hike – Rwenzori Mountains


The Experiential 3 day Mahoma Trail Hike – Rwenzori Mountains is a great way to see the Rwenzori Mountains of the Moon, the tallest Mountain Range in Africa, which is higher in elevation than the Alps of Europe. The 3-day trail give you a closer look at the Mountains of the Moon

The Experiential 3 day Mahoma Trail Hike – Rwenzori Mountains is a most scenic trail and it takes you up to 3,300-meter elevation of Lake Mahoma.

The Trail will test your physical strength and stamina however for most this is a quite doable hiking trail and you do not need mountaineering equipment for this hike and trail.

The Mohama Trail is one of Uganda’s Off-the-Beaten Path activities.  You will not have a traffic jam on this hike but enjoy your pristine surroundings.

Hitting the Mahoma Trail can be included in most of our Safaris in Western Uganda especially those that include Kibale Forest and Queen Elizabeth Park.


Ruboni-Village-WalkDay 1 – Drive to the Village of Ruboni

Depart early in the morning taking the 6 hour drive to the Village of Ruboni arriving at lunchtime.  You have a choice of Lodging, either using the Budget Ruboni Community Camp or the Upmarket Equator Snow Lodge.

Enjoy Lunch and during the afternoon take the Ruboni Village Walk, a three-hour walk seeing what village life is like for the Bakonzo People.  This is a small idyllic Village in the Rwenzori Mountains, for many it is the base-camp at the beginning or end of their Rwenzori Mountain Hike.

During the Village Walk meet those that weave baskets, the village blacksmith, the traditional healer, the village storyteller,  visit a home and help with the food preparation.  You can even take dancing and drumming lessons at 10 USD.

Day 2 – Nyakalengija Gate- Omuka Kizza Rest Camp at 2,977 meters.

As you ascend you will pass through a verdant rainforest along the Kyambogho Ride where you can see the Mubuku Valley below you.
You might see Colobus Monkeys, Blue Monkeys. at times you might even spot a Chimpanzee.  Forest Elephant tracks may also be seen and again during rare occasions be seen.
Birds are in abundance here and one of the favorite one is the Rwenzori Turaco.  Keep a lookout for the colorful Three-Horned Chameleon
Today’s destination is Kizza Camp where you will  spend the night, from the camp area you have an up close view of the Rwenzori Mountains, the foothills below and the town of Kasese in the distance looking like a scene from Lego-land.
Dinner – will take a bit of time to prepare here, it is good to have some snacks like granola bars and dried fruit with you to eat during your hike.  Bottled water will be always available during your time on the Mahoma Trail.
Day 3 – Omuka Kizza Rest Camp to Lake Mahoma 3,515 meters3 day Mahoma Trail Hike - Rwenzori Mountains
After a hearty Breakfast on this second day on the Trail, our goal today is Mahoma Lake as we move along in the Bamboo and heather forest where we often follow in the footprints of Forest Elephant and we might even be able watch them get a drink at the hot springs.
We move along a ridge that takes us to the Rukenga Valley where you will see what is called Everlasting Flowers and Giant Lobelias that can grow up 8 meters plus in height.

Once again there is no restaurant and it making your dinner in the Mountains.

Day 4 -Lake Mahoma – Nyakalengija Gate – Ruboni Village

After breakfast take a  walk around the lake and then the  descent back through the Nyabitaba ranger post and the Mpanga ridge to adjoin the Mubuku valley, where once again you will the unique  three-horned chameleons.

We return back to the Village of Ruboni for the night and check into Ruboni Community Camp or the upmarket Equator Snow Lodge for a celebratory dinner and a good night’s sleep in a bed with a bit more comfort.

Day 5 – Return to Kampala or Entebbe:

Breakfast and  we drive back to Kampala or Entebbe with lunch on the way.

Ruboni Community Camp hosts visitors from around the world and at the same time helps the local community with jobs and funding for various community projects.

You can stay in a self-contained cottage or a room with shared bath at budget rates.

Meals are served in the dining area and the meals are sumptuous consisting of local food with some international dishes.

It can be your affordable base lodging while you explore the Rwenzori Mountains of the Moon and its Foothills.

Hiking in Uganda is simply different from what you may be used to – many hikes are in various rainforest – the altitude is higher and  it will not be too hot due to the elevation.
