Afternoon Activities: We see two kinds of Gorilla Trekkers on a safari., those that want one activity after another and those that want to relax for an afternoon and take in their surroundings, even read a good book like a novel based in Uganda. That is great.
Others take the Caldera Hike near Mout Gahinga Lodge, visit the Batwa Village that Mount Gahinga Lodge is in the process for the original people of the forest, or visit the Batwa Vocational Project sponsored by the Lodge.
Dinner – at Mount Gahinga Lodge evening Traditional Batwa Dance and Music is often provided – their songs, if you understood them, most often are about their mourning the loss of the Forest from which they were evicted in 1991 to clear the way for Gorilla Tourism.
Meal Plan: Lunch – Dinner
Lodge: Mount Gahinga Lodge
Day 2- Gorilla Trekking in the Virunga Volcanoes in Mgahinga Gorilla Park.
An early Breakfast – the right equipment and clothing for your Trek. Further Trekking Information that will make this day a Success is found here.
Gorilla Wear: We suggest a day pack, packed lunch from the lodge, two liters of water, long trousers, long-sleeved shirt, hat, boots, thick socks, and sturdy gardening gloves. All this is not to make a fashion statement but for your protection against nettles, thorns, brush.
Tuck your trousers into the socks for extra protection against fire ants and exposed skin from touching nettles that abound here.
We supply you with bottled water, a walking stick, and a porter. One porter is needed for two people. The porter is an added plus since they assist you on the at times challenging trek.
You are trekking at an elevation above 2,200 meters which is not problematic for most. Though the trek is upward, it is not grueling and poses no problems for those with a moderate level of fitness.. The bamboo walking stick and the porter assist you in traversing the not so difficult trail.
You are off on your Safe and Secure Gorilla Trek with Rangers and secure escort to visit the Nyakagezi Family 10-members with now five Silverbacks, which is highly unusual. The blackbacks have matured into Silverbacks. Mark is the Leader of the family, assisted by his brother Mafia, their father Bugingo who used to be the leader has absconded the leadership to his son and plays the role of grandpa. They are followed by the now Silverbacks Ndungutse, and Rukundo. Females, Toddlers make up the rest of the Family. Keeping up with Gorilla Families is not always easy. The family was beset by a respiratory ailment in 2019 but intervention by the Gorilla Doctors saved the day and they all recovered from what could have been a fatal ailment. It is important for gorilla Trekker to abide by the rules for Gorilla Trekking.
The Nyakagezi Family advantage for trekkers is obtaining better photographs. The family is normally found in a more open area allowing photographers to obtain some excellent photos.
The length of the Trek is between four to five hours including one hour with the Nyakagezi Gorilla Family which is for most is a once in a lifetime experience. Normally you are back at Mount Gahinga Lodge by about 1:00 PM.
Afternoon: You might want to relax and reflect, enjoy the Drink of Choice in Uganda, Uganda Waragi. We suggest to mix it with Krest Bitter Lemon Soda. Others might want to take advantage of the activities offered by the Lodge.
Meal Plan: Breakfast -Lunch – Dinner
Lodge: Mount Gahinga Lodge
Day 3- Golden Monkey Trekking
Optional Golden Monkey Trekking- depending on flight out-$90 per person:
You embark on your Golden Monkey Trek with Uganda Wildlife Authority Rangers. This is a hike up on the sides of the Virunga Volcanoes in Mgahinga Gorilla Park to the Bamboo Forest. There are several thousand of the endangered Golden Monkeys found in the park. They are beautiful and colorful monkeys, weigh about 30 pounds when mature and some of the liveliest monkeys you have ever come across.
The group you are trekking will be about 100 in size, but you do not have time to count them since they are always on the move.
The trek is about 4 hours long after which you return to Mount Gahinga Lodge, the only luxury lodge near the park where you can enjoy your last views of Mount Gahinga as you have Lunch at Mount Gahinga Lodge.
The Return Drive to Kigali is about 3 hours. You gain one hour as you cross the border and switching to Central African Time. You should arrive at the airport at about 5:00 PM.
The Batwa were the first people that lived in and around the forests of Southwest Uganda including Mgahinga Gorilla Park. They lived in harmony with nature and the Gentle Giants of the Forest only taken what the needed to live. When the parks were formed in the early 90’s they became Conservation Refugees, landless since they never had titles to the forest, it had always been theirs, and they were stewards of it.
The life outside of the forest since their eviction has been a continuous trail of tears. They became marginalized, considered thieves, squatters, backward, and uneducated. They were a people without a voice living in the shadows of their former homes, eeking out a living as indentured servants working for others while losing their culture, pride, and dignity.
While you are at Mgahinga Gorilla Park, you can spend time with the Batwa on the Batwa Trail and see the forest through the eyes of the first people of the Forest. Mount Gahinga Lodge has built a Batwa Village that now belongs to the Batwa People, and the lodge takes its guests there and on their Batwa Heritage Trail.
