12 day Uganda – Rwanda – Gorilla – Chimpanzee Trekking – Wildlife Safari taking in the Best of East Africa

12 day Uganda – Rwanda – Gorilla – Chimpanzee Trekking – Wildlife Safari.  This combined Uganda – Rwanda Primate – Wildlife Safari gives you some of the Best Parks and activities in Uganda and Rwanda. Start in Entebbe – Uganda and fly out of Kigali Rwanda on this 12 day Safari in the Heart of Africa.

Day 1- Arrival in Uganda – Entebbe International  Airport:

Arrive at Entebbe airport – if you are coming from Europe – North America – most likely you will arrive at night after 10 pm.  If you come from the mid-east morning or afternoon, South Africa – early evening.

In each case you are met by our capable – driver-guide who will take you to the Lodge of your Choice.  Entebbe Airport is a quiet Budget Hotel, while 2 Friends Beach Hotel is a lower upmarket hotel on Lake Vitoria.

Arrival Notice:

Since you will be visiting both Uganda and Rwanda you will need an East African Tourist Visa – the process is supposed to be all online in the near future.  In the meantime follow instructions on our page.

Yellow Fever Immunization Certificate – is now required in East Africa – you should have it 30 days before arriving in East Africa, 10 days the latest. If you do not have it, you will be required to take it here.

Day 2 – Kibale Forest:

Breakfast and depart by 7 am for Kibale Forest – which is a scenic 5 hour drive from Entebbe – Arrive at Lunch time at Kibale Forest where lodging choices abound, from Budget to Upmarket.

You can stay inside of the Park in the Primate Lodge which has upmarket and moderately priced facilities, stay outside in Kibale Forest Camp with moderate or budget lodging, beyond at Kyaninga Lodge, Papaya Lake Lodge and Ndali with its luxury offerings when it comes to lodges, each one being located on a crater lake.

Check into the lodge of choice.


3 pm Bigodi Wetlands Sanctuary Walk – this is a guided walk through a jungle swamp -much of it on a wooden board-walk.  Here you can see primates including at times chimpanzees who come here to forage for food, also birds of various kinds including the Large Blue Turaco.

At times you can also spot the semi-aquatic Sitatunga Antelope that is web-footed.

Your guide is quite experienced, very knowledgeable about the flora and fauna found here  and this walk benefits the local Bigodi Community.

Day 3 – Kibale Forest Chimp Habituation Experience – all day:

A very early breakfast – take a packed lunch from the lodge – a day-pack that is rain-proof (just in case) to protect your belongings – 2 to 3 liters of water, snacks such as granola bars, camera equipment and anything else you would like.

Wear long- trousers, long-sleeved shirt, also wear a wide-brimmed hat, hiking boots with a good grip and well-worn in.

The Chimpanzee habituation experience begins early in the morning at dawn and lasts all day until late afternoon.  You are with a guide, and in the company of researchers, trackers, rangers and others who habituate chimps that you will be seeing today.

A one of a kind, unique experience – you will be able to shoot some great pictures and take home some great memories of this most eventful day with the chimpanzees of Kibale Forest.

 Day 4 – Queen Elizabeth Park:

Breakfast and we take the 2 1/2 hour drive to Queen Elizabeth Park.

Before Checking in at the Lodge you have chosen and there are many to choose from – Bush Lodge which offers both budget and moderate lodging, Enganzi Game lodge – moderate, Kazenyi Safari Camp has become a favorite among lower priced upmarket Lodges, Mweya Safari Lodge – a few we examples we take The Katwe Explosion Crater Drive27 kilometer drive where you are at the highest point in Queen Elizabeth Park where you have views of the Rwenzori Mountains of the Moon, the escarpment of the Albertine Rift, the Savannah below and Lake Edward and Lake George.

There are 12 craters found on this drive, some are covered with water, others with savannah and or forests.  Simply beautiful scenes that you can capture with your camera.

In the late afternoon we take a game drive with a Uganda Wildlife Authority Ranger on board. between your driver guide and the UWA ranger there is little that you will miss when it comes to birds, wildlife, and scenery before you.

Hopefully you will spot some lions, leopards, elephants, buffaloes, antelopes of various kind, warthogs, savannah birds and more.  Each game drive is about 3 hours in length and there is a pop-up roof that allows you to stand in the vehicle for best photographs while you are out on a game drive.

Day 5 – Queen Elizabeth Park:


Morning game drive – each game drive is a different experience for you to take in as you drive down a different game track – The Queen Elizabeth National Park – Mweya area is one of the most popular wildlife areas in southwest Uganda and has much to offer as you are on a game drive and it is always a most interesting adventure. Though you may again see the same animals such as Lions, Elephants, Buffaloes, Antelopes, the setting will be different from teh last game drive.

Elephants, Buffaloes, Antelopes have increased in numbers, in the case of Elephants it is almost back to the record 1960’s which is quite an accomplishment in regards to conservation.  Lion Protection has been increased with the help of the Uganda Carnivore Project working with local communities.

A Game drive is about 2 1/2 to three hours in length plus the time that it takes to get to the beginning of the Game Track.


 Afternoon Boat Safari on Kazinga Channel which is a natural channel that connects Lake George and Lake Edward.  This is one of the highlights of your time in Queen Elizabeth Park.

The boat slowly moves along the shore and you are able to see many pods of hippos, crocodiles, hippos, monitor lizards, antelopes, elephant herds, buffaloes, and at times in the late afternoon some predators come to water before the evening hunt.

Crocodiles are a recent addition since an absence of thousands of years.

They made their way up from the Semliki River when forests were cut down for farms and homesteads.

Day 6 – Ishasha Plains –  Queen Elizabeth Park:

Breakfast and we move to the Ishasha area (2 hour drive) of Queen Elizabeth Park -we check into the lodge of your  choice – there are three to choose from here – @The River L-odge Budget – Moderate – Ishasha Jungle Lodge – moderate and the luxury Ishasha Wilderness Camp


After lunch we take a game drive in search of the tree-climbing lions that the area is famous for.

The lions climb up into the trees and sleep the day away after the nights hunt, you may also spot a leopard up in a tree during this game drive.  Ishasha is the best area in East Africa for tree-climbing lions.  In Uganda you can find them in both Kidepo Valley Park and here in Ishasha.

There is much more to be seen here on the vast Savannah such as Elephant herds, buffaloes, antelopes including the larger Topi antelopes with their rich coloring.

Ishasha Sector of Queen Elizabeth is most enjoyable for those that stay and visit here and Ishasha Wilderness Tented Camp is the perfect place to stay in up-market comfort and style in the African Wild of Uganda

Day 7 – Rushaga Area of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest:


After breakfast another game drive to see the tree-climbing lions of Ishasha once again – each game drive is different – even if one looks for the same wildlife, there are always surprises and a variety of wildlife, birds to see.

Depart for Bwindi Impenetrable Forest – Rushaga area with lunch along the way


Lodging:  Gorilla Valley Lodge – Moderate – Gorilla Safari Lodge – Upmarket – Clouds Mountain Gorilla Lodge – Luxury

 Day 8  – Gorilla Trekking – Rushaga – Bwindi Impenetrable Forest:

Breakfast at the Lodge – pick up your packed lunch and put two lifters of water into your daypack.  Camera equipment, granola bars might come in handy.

Dress in long trousers, long-sleeved shirt – both for protection against nettles, branches, shrubs.  Some tuck their trousers or jeans into their socks to guard against soldier ants.

Light rain-jacket, hat with wide brim, sturdy gardening gloves to pull yourself on branches.

The services of a porter are suggested – it is worth the price  This frees you to take pictures and assists a Ugandan family.

The gorilla trek is from 3 to 5 hours in length or longer – however that hour with the mountain gorillas is most rewarding and you will not forget it anytime soon.

Optional Gorilla Habituation Experience:

Instead of gorilla trekking and being for one hour with a gorilla family – you can take an all-day trek on a Gorilla Habituation Experience which means that you are for 4 hours with a gorilla family being habituated in the Rushaga Area. The cost for a four hour permit is 1,500 usd compared to 600 usd or 750 usd in Rwanda.

Day 9-Move to Rwanda – Volcanoes National Park:

Breakfast and we move to Buniga Forest where we go on a guided walk with the first people of the forest who have been here for thousands of years, the Batwa Pygmy people.

Learn the ancient ways of hunting and gathering as you move through the montane forest from the Batwa people on this interactive walk.  This is a most informative – interactive walk and you have a chance to learn as to how small of an ecological footprint they left on their forest environment.

Lunch at Dian Fossey’s home away from home in Rwanda – the Travellers Rest Hotel in the town of Kisoro. This hotel was owned by what one can call the Father of Uganda Gorilla Tourism – Walter Baumgaertel.

After lunch we cross the border into Rwanda.  Quite a few countries are exempt from having to have a visa – if you need a visa – you have to apply on line and you cannot purchase it at the point of entry.

Arrive at Kinigi in Rwanda – There are lots of choices here that you can make from budget to luxury.

Day 10 – Gorilla Trekking – Volcanoes National Park:

 Early breakfast and off to Park Headquarters for your gorilla tracking orientation where you are also offered cup of coffee or tea as you a lovely Rwandan Intore Dance Performance.

Wear the same kind of clothing as you did for Bwindi Impenetrable Forest Gorilla Tracking.  Porters once again are there to assist you and to free you in order to take pictures.

You are assigned to track a gorilla family group based on your level of fitness and here in some cases you climb up high – depending where on the volcano your group is located.

This is your second gorilla trek in a different environment compared to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest in Uganda.

Three to five hours is the average gorilla trek, in some cases it may last all day depending on where your group is located on that day.

After Gorilla Trek – time permitting we visit the Iby” Iwacu Cultural village for a look into Rwandan life and culture.

Day 11 – Nyungwe Forest National Park – Nyungwe Top View Hill Hotel:

Breakfast and we take the most scenic and pleasant drive Nyungwe Forest National Park where we arrive at lunchtime and check into the moderately priced Nyungwe Top View Hill Hotel or the exclusive Nyungwe Forest Lodge


In the afternoon we take a guided tour of East Africa’s only Forest Canopy Walk.  We hike to the Canopy Walk – take a look from below and climb up 50 meters where we see life in the tree-tops – primates, birds, butterflies in abundance  – it is a 90 meter canopy walk that is most exhilarating for visitors.

There is simply nothing like it elsewhere in East Africa.  The Canopy Forest Walk is an attractions that brings visitors from far and wide and most are glad that they came for the views, the wildlife, the experience of being 50 meters above the forest floor seeing things that one cannot from below.

  Day 12 – Kigali – Departure for Home:

Breakfast and morning guided walk – Colobus Monkey Tracking – you will find them in large groups here – as many as 200 of them.  Grey Cheeked Mangabey Monkey Tracking or Forest Walk.  The choice is yours.


Depart for Kigali and airport departure

Overnight lodging can be arranged in case you have a morning departure time we will adjust the safari.

Visits to arts and crafts markets can be included in Kigali and you can have your lunch at the original Hotel Rwanda before departing
