Your 10-Day Luxury Uganda Primate-Wildlife Safari in Detail


Day 1 – Drive to Rushaga – Bwindi Impenetrable Forest in Uganda:

Your 10-Day Luxury Discover Uganda Primate-Wildlife Safari begins. We leave your hotel in Kigali for  Rushaga. The drive time to Rushaga is about 4-hour plus depending on Border Crossing – Visa for Uganda is 50 USD.  You can also get an East African Visa from Rwanda Migration Ministry which you can get online.

Normally the border crossing is about 30 minutes and you are in Uganda heading for the ancient Bwindi Impenetrable Forest through what is often called the Gorilla Highlands and Lake Mutanda.

We arrive in the Rushaga or Nkuringo area of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest where there are more and more mid-range lodging choices that you can choose below.

Lunch

Option: During the Afternoon you can take the Buniga Forest Walk with the Batwas – a Pygmy Tribe, the first people of the Rainforest in the area.  The lived in harmony with nature until they were evicted from the Forests when the National Parks came into being in 1991.  This is a 3-hour activity and you can include a visit to their village.  You will learn the ancient Batwa Culture of hunting and gathering.

It is the only up-market Lodge in the Rushaga Area at an affordable price and a great location near the park headquarters from where you can track gorillas or spend 4 hours with them on a Gorilla Habituation Experience.

Each cottage comes with a bath and a fireplace to take the chill off of those colder Bwindi Nights.  It is a short ride to the trailheads in Rushaga from here.

There is a family cottage with two bedrooms that will sleep 4 with a sitting room and fireplace for those what we think are chilly Bwindi Nights

Gorilla Safari Lodge is the only upmarket Lodge in the Rushaga area of the park and we have used it consistently since its inception.

The lodge received a Facelift in early 2018.


Day 2 – Gorilla Habituation Experience – Rushaga:

Early Breakfast and take your packed lunch from the lodge, have a daypack,  3 liters of water, daypack, long trousers, gardening gloves for pulling yourself up on branches, long-sleeved shirt. waterproof boots, hat, rain jacket, use a walking stick and the services of a porter at a small cost.

Meet the researchers, trackers and guides and head for the location of your gorilla family group being habituated and your four hours in their presence and learning their ways.

With the trek in and trek out – the 4-hour Gorilla Habituation Experience – this is an all-day trek, not only do you see the Gorillas with only 4 participants, but you learn about the Gorillas habits and ways from the Gorillas and the Researchers.

Return to the trailhead and it is back to the lodge.

Please Note:  Gorilla Habituation Experience Permits are very limited.  One has to be flexible, we suggest that you plan your time in Africa around the Gorillas first and not attempt to fit it in after you made all your other African Plans. Gorilla Trekking can be substituted for the Gorilla Habituation, this is done due to physical limitations or cost control.

Day 3- Queen Elizabeth Park to Ishasha:

After Breakfast, we drive to Queen Elizabeth Park where we stop in the Ishasha Region to take a Game Drive in search of the Tree-Climbing Lions of Ishasha.  This the best place in East Africa where you can readily see the Tree Climbing Lions sleep away the day. Besides Lions, there is a large Elephant – Buffalo Population here

Drive time from Rushaga to Ishasha is 5-hours depending on the road conditions that day.

Option:  Stay one night in Ishasha at the exclusive Ishaha Wilderness Camp.

Lunch at Savanna Resort before the Tree-Climbing Lion Game Drive

Continue to the northern area of the park where you check into your lodge.  From Ishasha to the Northern Area of the park it is 2-hours plus drive time.

Option:  Add a night in Ishasha and cut your drive time that day.  Stay in the exclusive Ishasha Wilderness Camp along the Ntungwe River.

 Kyambura Gorge Lodge – Luxury:

Kyambura Game Lodge took an old coffee plantation and gave it new life in the form of a luxury Lodge bringing another level of service to the area.

The Cottages have their own style and design, something that is unique to the Volcanoes Lodges in Uganda and Rwanda.

View-wise you overlook the Kyambura Gorge, that gash in the Savannah with its underground forest, its River of the Blind and the Chimpanzees that are at home here.

The lodge has a nice swimming pool where you can take a break from the Equatorial Sun – have a great view and a cool drink.  The lodge is also near some villages that you can visit while staying at Kyambura Gorge Lodge including the women coffee-growing project sponsored by the lodge.

Mweya Safari Lodge has been called a Sheraton Hotel in the African Bush – Up-market Luxury overlooking the beautiful Kazinga Channel – Mweya Safari Lodge offers consistent up-market comfort with a delightful African Touch in the African Wild of Queen Elizabeth Lodge.

Location is one of its best features – Mweya Safari Lodge is located in one of the best areas of Queen Elizabeth Park, near the game drives and also just above where the boat launches begin their journey on the Kazinga Channel on the Mweya Peninsula.

Day 4- Queen Elizabeth Park:

 Breakfast

Lion Tracking Research – here you are with Researchers from the Carnivore Project and track the Collared Lions, leopards in this part of the park, not only will you see lions, but a learning experience about the lions.

The Lion Research is not done by most visitors to the park, it is, however, one of the most interesting activities here.

Lunch

In the afternoon the fabulous Kazinga Channel Wildlife – Birding, Reptile Boat Safari using a Mweya Safari Lodge Boat. This is one of the highlights of your Queen Elizabeth Park Visit.

Day 5- Kibale Forest:

Breakfast and at 6:30 am we take the 27 kilometer Explosion Crater Drive that was featured in National Geographic,  It is the highest point in the park.  Sunrise is a good time for picture-taking here.  The views are fantastic and you will see some wildlife such as Elephants.

After the drive, we continue to Kibale Forest which is a 2 hour plus drive and check into your Lodge.

Lunch

Afternoon 3 PM – Bigodi Wetlands Sanctuary Hike.  This is a guided 3-hour hike through a Jungle Swamp, much of it is on planks that act like a boardwalk above the swamp.  Your experienced guide is from the local community that has maintained the Wetlands for many years with thousands visiting each year.

During the Afternoon you might spot Chimpanzees, Colobus Monkeys, also baboons.  The area is well-known for birds, the chief attraction is the Blue Turaco.

When it comes to Mammals you can see otters, bush pigs, mongoose, and the rare Sitatunga Antelope to name a few.

Option not included in price:  Nocturnal Forest Walk where you see the creatures of the night such as pottos and bush babies with spotlights, plus other creatures of the Night.

Day 6 – Chimpanzee Habituation Experience Kibale Forest or Chimpanzee Trekking

Early Breakfast and you are off to meet with your Ranger-Guide who will take you into Kibale Forest where a Chimpanzee Group is being habituated, a process that takes up to two years.  Habituation teaches the Chimpanzees to allow humans in their presence.

A chimp community can number over 100 members. Chimpanzees live in a relational social structure,  the alpha males defend against other chimpanzees trying to move into the territory.  Females are part of smaller family groups and nurture the young.

Way before you see the chimpanzees, you will hear their hooting calls in the distance.  Soon you come upon them and spend one hour with them observing their ways and habits.

Normally you might see 4 to 6 primates here, many of the birds, the butterflies, mammals found here and of course the forest itself with its vegetation that is unique. On an all-day habituation, you will see a lot more than on a trek.

It is important that you wear the right clothing and shoes and have at least 3 liters of water with you, plus a packed lunch

Note:  Instead of the all-day Chimpanzee Habituation Experience – Chimpanzee Trekking can be substituted.

Day 7 – Drive to Murchison Falls Park:

Breakfast and leave Kibale Forest at 7 am for the drive to Murchison Falls Parks stopping for lunch in the town of Hoima at the Kontiki Hotel.

In the Afternoon we cross the River Nile by Ferry to the Wildlife Side of the park where you check into your lodge

Note:  Sunset game drive may be taken depending on the time of arrival and your stamina.

Late afternoon we are off for the first game drive in Murchison Falls National Park where you can see lions, elephants, giraffes, antelopes of all types, warthogs, buffaloes.  There are also many Savanna Birds that you will come across

The vehicle has a pop-up roof so that you can stand and take better pictures.  Your Driver- Guide and a Uganda Wildlife Ranger will point out the animals that you might not miss them

Back to your lodging and there is nothing like a sunset over the Nile.

Baker’s Lodge is one of the new lodging choices in Murchison Falls Park. For those who are looking for an out of the ordinary lodge experience in Uganda, in Murchison Falls Park, Baker’s Lodge is just right for you.

You will enjoy your time here along the River Nile with a splendid view of the River, wildlife, and birds that are all around you.

There are 8 tented cottages that await, enjoy a romantic Dinner along the Nile, a bush breakfast while here and the wildlife in one of Uganda’s best all-around parks.

Baker’s Lodge is one of the best luxury lodges in all of Uganda the downside is that you have to cross the Nile by ferry for game drives.

Paraa Safari Lodge – Best Lodging Location

The Jewel of the Nile is not a movie from the past but a present reality along the historic River Nile – the real Jewel of the Nile is a Lodge called Paraa Safari Lodge which offers comfort, relaxation with rooms that have a view of the Nile, the second floor rooms affording the best views where you can see wildlife and birds right from your room.

There are also Tents, luxury Tented Cottages that you can choose from at this upmarket Lodge.

There are various choices of rooms, the standard ones, luxury suites and the secluded and exclusive “Queen’s Cottage” closer to the River Nile.

Paraa Lodge can best be described as a Hotel in the Bush with a total 54 rooms, however, one still feels like he is there all alone as one spends a night or two at Paraa Safari Lodge – it being the most affordable up-market Lodge in Uganda.


Day 8 – Murchison Falls Park:

Early morning breakfast and off you are for another game drive across the savanna, along Lake Albert Delta, abundant wildlife as you move slowly as the sun rises.  Welcome to Africa.  What you are sensing and feeling, seeing around you cannot be replicated anywhere else in the world, this is Murchison Falls Park with its birds, lions, leopards, elephants, hippos, buffaloes, warthogs, giraffes, humorous appearing warthogs. This is Africa and you are on safari in the heart of it – Uganda.

After lunch, it is one of the highlights of your Murchison Falls National Park Safari, the boat safari trip up the Nile River.  Slowly moving along the river bank viewing crocodiles, an  abundance of hippos, elephants, buffaloes, antelopes, lots of birds including the fish eagle, storks and so much more. The boat moves gently up the river and stays on the left-hand side so that you see most of the animals who come to the river.  Herds of Elephants cooling off, Hippopotamus frolicking, crocodiles just dozing in the African sun.

Then before you is Murchison Falls – the most powerful waterfall in the World.    The River Nile is 50 meters wide above the falls, moves down through a 6-meter gorge and falls down 43 meters, the sound is deafening and the sight makes one realize how forceful nature can be.

Close by, there is a bank on the river filled with Nile crocodiles basking in the afternoon sun, just down from there you can see a group of hippos frolicking in the water of the Nile.  There are literally thousands of hippopotamus to be found here, birds in abundance.

At the bottom of the falls disembark and take the guided hike up along the most powerful waterfall in the world – Murchison Falls.  You will be cooled down with some mist from the falls to keep you comfortable.  At the top of the falls, you are met by your driver guide and you will cross the Nile by ferry and head back to your lodge for dinner and rest. This is the same trail that Winston Churchill used in 1907 when he visited the Falls and came down it

Day 9 – Murchison Falls Park:

Breakfast and Delta Boat Ride into Lake Albert.  It is here that you often see the elusive Shoebill Stork, plus many other Water Birds, wildlife along this 3 to 4 hour Boat Safari.

Afternoon Game Drive – your last one on this Safari.

Day 10 – Murchison Falls Park – Entebbe

Morning and breakfast after which we cross the Nile by ferry and we head for  Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary.

Here, with a Ranger, you go on foot for a Rhino Trek- this is about 1 1/2 hours long and you come into close proximity with the Rhinos.

Lunch at the Amuka Lodge which is inside of Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary and offers an excellent BBQ Lunch to guests.

Kampala is a 3-hour plus drive from here depending on traffic.  Entebbe International Airport this time of the day will be a 4-hour drive due to the traffic gridlock that is part of late afternoon and evening Kampala.
