The Musanze cave like the others here were formed over centuries of volcanic eruption by lava basaltic layers from Mount Bisoke and Mount Sabinyo volcanoes. During times of war and conflict the caves became a hiding place and shelter and so it was during the 1994 Genocide in this region of Rwanda, a massacre took place in the area and the cave and area are given respect by Rwandans as one of those sacred places that are also memorials to its past.

In 2013 Rwanda developed the Musanze Cave as a tourism site and now visitors come here on daily basis to explore the caves
