Entebbe Botanical Gardens is a must-visit place if you have a day in Entebbe. It is probably the top attraction for Tourists, and many Ugandans also enjoy it. Birders love it, and it is a perfect introduction for Birders to Uganda. Those that got off a long flight will enjoy stretching their legs as they venture through the Gardens. The lush tropical foliage alone is worth a visit here.

Entebbe Botanical Gardens provides a perfect introduction to the Pearl of Africa with its beauty and magical splendor. The Botanical Gardens is a beautiful pearl within the Pearl of Africa – Uganda – that most visitors do not see since it is not on itineraries unless you are a birder.
Entebbe Botanical Gardens is one of the best places near Kampala, where you can spot many species of birds.
It is also a place of tranquility and peace, a feast for the eyes. There is a notable absence of people during the week. You are immersed in nature, the sounds of birds breaking the moment’s stillness. It is only a lovely place to spend a few hours – you can bring along a picnic lunch and make it an all-day adventure.
The Entebbe Botanical Gardens was established at the turn of the 20th Century. It is a place of flowers, plants, and trees. Not only native to Uganda but from other tropical locations around the world – it is undoubtedly a place of beauty and discovery for flowers, plants, shrubs, trees, monkeys, insects, and magnificent birds. It is a birder’s paradise just 40 minutes from Kampala.
The Entebbe Botanical Gardens are not equipped for the disabled. However, a slow drive in a safari vehicle through the park will undoubtedly allow anyone unable to walk to see these wondrous gardens. It is best for those coming to do some birding to have an East African Orthinology Book on hand. Additionally, a good pair of binoculars will make your time here better. Ask one young man to talk about birds if you need a birding guide. Within a few minutes, you will know whether it would be good to have him along. Please note that the self-appointed guides at Entebbe Botanical Gardens are aggressive, even in Uganda, where the need is always the motivation. Right at the entrance in the tall trees, you usually find a pair of Verreaux’s eagle owls. Birds of the gardens include the orange-tufted and red-chested Sunbirds and Orange Weaver. The latter species is located in the bushes on the shores of Lake Victoria. You will find the slender-billed Northern Brown-throated, yellow-backed, Jackson’s Golden-backed, Black-headed, and Vieillot’s black weavers.
The rocky shores along the Lake make an ideal observation point. On the Lake and around the beach, look for long-tailed Cormorants, Common Squacco and black-headed herons, Hamerkop, African Open-billed Stork, yellow-billed ducks, Grey-headed gulls, various terns, giant and Pied Kingfishers, and swamp Flycatcher. Scan the boats at the large jetty where you often find Pratincoles (2-3 pairs are usually present). Black-headed Gonolek and Red-chested Sunbirds occur in the dense scrub covering the headland.
As you stroll along the paths, you will find a medicinal garden, stands of Bamboo, thick underbrush, and towering trees. S a lovely morning, afternoon, or full day in the quiet of the Botanical Gardens along with Lake Victoria that seems to appear over and over as you walk along. Local Rumors (including Bradt Guide) have it that the old black and white Tarzan movies were made here…enjoy your day in Entebbe Botanical Gardens.
