Is Uganda Safe for Tourists and Travelers?

Terrorism of one kind or another has visited many parts of the world.  On July 11-2010 Innocent people died and were wounded by terrorists in Kampala, Uganda.  Now potential visitors are counting the costs of visiting Uganda and questioning whether Uganda is a safe Travel Destination for travelers.  As an American living in Uganda do I feel safe here?  The answer is a resounding yes.  With certain precautions, by using a reliable tour company whose interests are your well being, who use Hotels which are small, from boutique up-market hotels to budget accommodations that meet your need, and then go on a safari in the safe and secure National Parks of Uganda, yes, you can be safe and secure in Uganda.

The Uganda government has taken possible precautions to make sure that visitors entrusted into their care will be safe here and cancellations to Uganda have been minimal since the terrorist attacks on July 11, 2011.

As I write the African Union Summit is taking place just down the road from my house, since early this morning I can hear far off sirens and horns announcing another convoy for a President for one of the African States.

Life has changed in Uganda since the July 11, 2010 Bombings

  • Churches have now put security measures into place to provide security for parishioners.

  • Nightlife which was very vibrant in Uganda has visible diminished with people simply staying home for the time being.

  • Security is everywhere - even the taxi vans are checking people entering the 14 passenger vans.

  • Shopping centers have upped the security when entering a place such as Garden City Mall.

  • Large Hotels - have become serious and making drivers and passengers get out of the vehicle and even checking their pockets.

  • Even the large Owino Market - a mainstay for clothing, shoes and other things has security in its place at the main gates.

Uganda has become more secure and even petty theft and crimes will decrease with the increased security now in place.  This bombing attacks have made Uganda an all around more safe place to visit.  It is of course ver sad that it had to take such a tragic event such the bombings of July 11, 2010 to put such safety measures into being.  Uganda grieves for the dead and their families but also is ensuring that those who dies did not die in vain, that their death is providing safety and life for others.  Uganda will never forget these 74 plus innocent people that have lost their lives in such a tragic manner.

Ugandans are some of the most resilient people in the World:  The people have seen wars, revolutions, overthrows, dictators, bombing attacks come and go since independence in 1962.  For the last 26 years there has been a stability in much of the country and since June 2006 that stability has come to all of Uganda.  Ugandans have endured and suffered, have bled, died, and survived all that has been thrown at them by dictators, rebel groups and the events of life since 1962, but they have pulled themselves together, rebuilt and restored and gone on in building their beloved Pearl of Africa - Uganda.

This is another one of those tough times and Uganda and its people will be as resilient as ever before and Uganda will once again triumph over a terrible tragedy...as is said here "For God and my Country."

Below are various pages that deal with Safety and Security in Uganda.  Topics that deal with general security such as avoiding petty theft while others deal with terrorist attacks and some practical steps to avoid them.  There is even a page on safe and secure safari.
