The Greenest country in East-Africa – Uganda

I hail from the Evergreen State in the USA – Washington State – when I came to Uganda in the early 90’s I was pleasantly surprised – just driving from the airport at Entebbe to Kampala, one can not help but the notice the soothing color green most everywhere – Banana Groves and Gardens, pastures, Gardens, flowering trees that display its flower against a verdant backdrop of green leaves and that is just the beginning of one’s journey to Uganda – The Evergreen State of Africa.

Kenya, Tanzania have patches of green – Uganda on the other hand is blanketed by the color green most everywhere – the soil is so fertile that you could put a dried out walking stick into it and by morning you just might find some fresh sprouts springing forth. Simply amazing how even my plants in the garden and on the veranda simply thrive – no fertilizer, just natural soil, and water – the relaxing color green abounds in Uganda, wherever you look it drapes the countryside, even enhancing the more basic dwellings.

In Uganda the reason for its evergreen state of being  is simply the location, it is on the equator, yes, high up creating holiday like weather all year-long, visit Entebbe Botanical Gardens, Mabamba Swamp . Mabira Forest – all a short drive from Kampala, all gifted various shades of green, soothing to the eyes and to the soul.  Even when you move along the savannahs of the vast Ishasha Plains or Murchison Falls and see grass-fires – it is Nature’s way of restoring itself, soon green grass will grown once again – you can easily spot the wildlife not hidden by the tall savannah grass – a carpet of green everywhere, the tea, coffee, sugarcane fields are always near.

There is nothing like taking a hike in the Ancient Bwindi Impenetrable Rainforest, the jungles at Semliki or Kibale, a time in the foothills of the Rwenzori Mountains, or a hike in the shadows of the volcanoes of Mgahinga Gorilla National Park – no matter if you visit a Shamba (a small farm) or a large rainforest –the color green will be all around you…Uganda is truly the Evergreen State of Africa…from the Emerald Pearl of Africa…jon
