Travel Forums – the best source for information?

Travel forums can be great or be filled with misinformation

Amazing what you can find on Travel Forums regarding Uganda

Every day I spend a little time on various travel forums and usually the topic that I look up is regarding Uganda Travel.  Just over the weekend there was a discussion as to which country is better for Gorilla Tracking and one man – obviously full of wisdom wrote – “You have lowland gorillas in the Bwindi Forest in Uganda and you have mountain gorillas in the Virunga Mountains in Rwanda.” That is simply rubbish but it is indicative of similar disinformation and misinformation that you will find on travel forums – others chimed in to correct him – Virunga Mountains – sorry – it is the Virunga Volcano chain – 3 of which are in Rwanda and some are shared with Rwanda and Democratic Republic of Congo.  In German we have a name for such armchair experts in Travel Forums – “Besserwisser.”  Someone who knows everything better, but do you get current and accurate information?  Hang on…I find that there are all kind of people on these forums – serious travelers that want to know the latest and best information, people who like to see themselves in print on line (get a blog) and predators who are simply wanting to sell their tours and write on forums, but their real purpose is selling a tour in Uganda or another country about which the forum discussion is about.

If you want real and solid information about Uganda – get the 6th Bradt Guide on Uganda (the prices for hotels and food are outdated) full with proper and correct information regarding Uganda – no forum rubbish, great insights and usually correct information also in depth articles from culture to historical background – it is simply the best travel book on Uganda.  If you are coming to Uganda – the Bradt Guide (6th edition) is a must read.

The other source of correct information regarding Uganda will be a safari tour operator (use one that is an AUTO member – Association of Uganda Tour Operators) such as Kabiza Wilderness Safaris – we usually get back to you with answers – links – information that you need – and our web pages and blog is current and applicable.

Websites and Uganda Travel Blogs such as ours (over 900 pages of information) will often give you insights – in the case of our Blog – it is not so much about selling – but information about Uganda – Uganda Travel Information, Uganda Travel Advice, Uganda Travel Tips, Uganda Insights into places off of the beaten Tourist Path and much more.

Travel Forums are great, can give you previous travelers insights, opinions and their advice – however they are also a source of what I call simple uniformed rubbish that mislead the potential traveler to a country such as Uganda.  Forums in regards to reviews of lodgings and accommodations can easily be manipulated and there are cases where I have seen such evidence in Uganda, where a mediocre lodging gets great ratings – amazing – when our clients have voice complaints and we no longer use that accommodation.

Beyond Forums often potential travelers will ask Ugandan friends they have met via Facebook or Twitter about Uganda and travel here – the sad reality is that most Ugandans have never visited their Parks, seen the primates, the wildlife and scenic wonders – domestic tourism is talked about but there is no infrastructure for affordable Uganda Domestic Tourism – those friends can inform you regarding Ugandan Culture, Ugandan Life and ways, but often are not a source for travel information to and in Uganda – a reality that hopefully will change in the future.

The best Source for information about Uganda Travel – Tours – Safaris – Accommodations  comes from those who are here – involved in Tourism, know the country, know Uganda’s National Park, know where to find wildlife, people who are informed and have an extensive background in Uganda Tourism and Travel – most will simply be passionate about Uganda and love to give you information without strings attached.  If you contact a Ugandan Tour Operator that is a member of AUTO – Association of Uganda Tour Operators – most of them love to talk – to write you regarding Uganda and in most cases it will be sound advice based on current facts and situations in Uganda…from Kampala…jon
