Uganda – Rwanda Combined Primate and Wildlife Safari – Start your Safari in Entebbe where you arrive in Uganda and fly out of Kigali Rwanda


2-Friends-Beach-Hotel-Entebbe-arrivalDay 1- Arrival in Uganda – Entebbe International  Airport – 2 Friends Beach Hotel:

Arrive at Entebbe airport – if you are coming from Europe – North America – most likely you will arrive at night after 10 pm.  If you come from the mid-east morning or afternoon, South Africa – early evening.

In each case you are met by our capable – driver-guide who will take you to @ Friends Boutique Beach Hotel – newer room with view of Lake Victoria.

There is a swimming pool for your enjoyment – excellent choice of food from the menu and extensive wine list for you.  Service here – is of the highest standard and you will most likely enjoy your time here along Lake Victoria in Entebbe.

Primate-lodge-inside-Kibale-ForestDay 2 – Depart for Safari and transfer to Primate Lodge at Kibale Forest:

Breakfast and depart by 7 am for Kibale Forest – which is a scenic 5 hour drive from Entebbe – Arrive at Lunch time at Primate Forest Lodge – Tented Camp – up-market lodging with bath in back of tent.  Tents are on platforms and you have an outside seating area to enjoy.

This lodge is right in the Park which means no driving in the morning for your chimpanzee activity.

LunchBigodi-Wetlands-Sanctuary

3 pm Bigodi Wetlands Sanctuary Walk – this is a guided walk through a jungle swamp -much of it on a wooden board-walk.  Here you can see primates including at times chimpanzees who come here to forage for food, also birds of various kinds including the Large Blue Turaco.

At times you can also spot the semi-aquatic Sitatunga Antelope that is web-footed.

Your guide is quite experienced, very knowledgeable about the flora and fauna found here  and this walk benefits the local Bigodi Community.

Chimpanzee-habituation-experienceDay 3 – Kibale Forest Chimp Habituation Experience – all day:

A very early breakfast – take a packed lunch from the lodge - a day-pack that is rain-proof (just in case) to protect your belongings – 2 to 3 liters of water, snacks such as granola bars, camera equipment and anything else you would like.

Wear long- trousers, long-sleeved shirt, also wear a wide-brimmed hat, hiking boots with a good grip and well-worn in.

The Chimpanzee habituation experience begins early in the morning at dawn and lasts all day until late afternoon.  You are with a guide, and in the company of researchers, trackers, rangers and others who habituate chimps that you will be seeing today.

A one of a kind, unique experience – you will be able to shoot some great pictures and take home some great memories of this most eventful day with the chimpanzees of Kibale Forest.

Day 4 – Transfer to Queen Elizabeth Park – Katara Lodge:katara-lodge

Breakfast and we take the 2 1/2 hour drive to Queen Elizabeth Park.

Before Checking in at Katara Lodge we take one of the most scenic drives in Uganda – The Explosion Crater Drive – 27 kilometer drive where you are at the highest point in Queen Elizabeth Park where you have views of the Rwenzori Mountains of the Moon, the escarpment of the Albertine Rift, the Savannah below and Lake Edward and Lake George.

There are 12 craters found on this drive, some are covered with water, others with savannah and or forests.  Simply beautiful scenes that you can capture with your camera.

Check into Katara Lodge – each cottage has a roll-out bed that you can use to sleep outside under the stars on your deck – a very different experience.  There is also a swimming pool for your enjoyment and a most splendid view of the savannah.

Lunch

In the late afternoon we take a game drive with a Uganda Wildlife Authority Ranger on board. between your driver guide and the UWA ranger there is little that you will miss when it comes to birds, wildlife, and scenery before you.

Hopefully you will spot some lions, leopards, elephants, buffaloes, antelopes of various kind, warthogs, savannah birds and more.  Each game drive is about 3 hours in length and there is a pop-up roof that allows you to stand in the vehicle for best photographs while you are out on a game drive.

Day 5 – Queen Elizabeth Park:

Breakfast

Morning game drive – each game drive is a different experience for you to take in as you drive down a different game track – you might see the same animals again, however it is in a different setting that makes each wildlife game drive a delight.

The Queen Elizabeth National Park – Mweya area is one of the most popular wildlife areas in southwest Uganda and has much to offer as you are on a game drive and it is always a most interesting adventure.kazinga-boat-safari

Lunch

AfternoonBoat Safari on Kazinga Channel which is a natural channel that connects Lake George and Lake Edward.  This is one of the highlights of your time in Queen Elizabeth Park.  The boat slowly moves along the shore and you are able to see many pods of hippos, crocodiles, hippos, monitor lizards, antelopes, elephant herds, buffaloes, and at times in the late afternoon some predators come to water before the evening hunt.

 ishasha-lionsDay 6 – Transfer to Rushaga Area of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest – with game drive at Ishasha – Tree Climbing Lions:

Breakfast and we move to the Ishasha area (2 hour drive) of Queen Elizabeth Park – here we take a game drive in search of the tree-climbing lions that the area is famous for.

The lions climb up into the trees and sleep the day away after the nights hunt, you may also spot a leopard up in a tree during this game drive.  Ishasha is the best area in East Africa for tree-climbing lions.  In Uganda you can find them in both Kidepo Valley Park and here in Ishasha.

Lunch at Savannah resort and we continue to the Gorilla-Safari-LodgeRushaga region of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest where you will go on your first gorilla trek tomorrow.

Arrive at Gorilla Safari Lodge in the late afternoon – up-market lodge with fireplaces in each cottage to take the Bwindi Chill off of the evening and night in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest.

The Lodge is located in the Rushaga area of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest.

Bwindi-Impenetrable-Forest-Gorilla-Tracking-UgandaDay 7  – Gorilla Tracking – Rushaga – Bwindi Impenetrable Forest:

Breakfast at the Lodge – pick up your packed lunch and put two lifters of water into your daypack.  Camera equipment, granola bars might come in handy.

Dress in long trousers, long-sleeved shirt – both for protection against nettles, branches, shrubs.  Some tuck their trousers or jeans into their socks to guard against soldier ants.  Light rain-jacket, hat with wide brim, sturdy gardening gloves to pull yourself on branches.

Porter to carry your belongings is provided for the trek.  This frees you to take pictures and assists a Ugandan family.

The gorilla trek is from 3 to 5 hours in length or longer – however that hour with the mountain gorillas is most rewarding and you will not forget it anytime soon.

Buniga-Forest-WalkDay 8 -Move to Rwanda – Mountain View Gorilla Lodge – Kinigi:

Breakfast and we move to Buniga Forest where we go on a guided walk with the first people of the forest who have been here for thousands of years, the Batwa Pygmy people.

Learn the ancient ways of hunting and gathering as you move through the montane forest from the Batwa people on this interactive walk.  This is a most informative – interactive walk and you have a chance to learn as to how small of an ecological footprint they left on their forest environment.

Lunch at Dian Fossey’s home away from home in Rwanda – the Travelers Rest Hotel in the town of Kisoro. This hotel was owned by what one can call the Father of Uganda Gorilla Tourism – Walter Baumgaertel.

Mountain-Gorilla-View-LodgeAfter lunch we cross the border into Rwanda.  Quite a few countries are exempt from having to have a visa – if you need a visa – you have to apply on line and you cannot purchase it at the point of entry.

You can also obtain a East African Visa that is good for days for Uganda, Rwanda and Kenya – the cost is 100 usd – a Rwandan visa if you need to buy one is 60 usd, Uganda visa is 50 usd.

Arrive at Kinigi in Rwanda – located next to Volcanoes National Park. Check into Mountain View Gorilla Lodge where you have your own private cottage.

Day 9 – Gorilla Tracking in Rwanda at Volcanoes National Park:

Early breakfast and off to Park Headquarters for your gorilla tracking orientation where yGorilla-Tracking-Rwandaou are also offered cup of coffee or tea as you a lovely Rwandan Intore Dance Performance.

Wear the same kind of clothing as you did for Bwindi Impenetrable Forest Gorilla Tracking.  Porters once again are there to assist you and to free you in order to take pictures.

You are assigned to track a gorilla family group based on your level of fitness and here in some cases you climb up high – depending where on the volcano your group is located.

This is your second gorilla trek in a different environment compared to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest in Uganda.

Three to five hours is the average gorilla trek, in some cases it may last all day depending on where your group is located on that day.

After Gorilla Trek – time permitting we visit the Iby Iwacu Cultural village for a look into Rwandan life and culture.

Nyungwe-Forest-Lodge-RwandaDay 10 – Nyungwe Forest National Park – Nyungwe Forest Lodge:

Breakfast and we take the most scenic and pleasant drive Nyungwe Forest National Park where we arrive at lunchtime at this lodge in a mosd beautiful setting among tea-fields overlooking Nyungwe Forest.

Nyungwe Forest Lodge is a newly built lodge at the edge of  Nyungwe Forest with great views all-around and superb comfort and service.

There is also a swimming pool for your enjoyment after a long hike through the forest.  Service and Food are simply excellent here at Nyungwe Forest National Park.

Lunch

In the afternoon we take a guided tour of East Nyungwe-Forest-Canope-WalkAfrica’s only Forest Canopy Walk.  We hike to the Canopy Walk – take a look from below and climb up 50 meters where we see life in the tree-tops – primates, birds, butterflies in abundance  – it is a 90 meter canopy walk that is most exhilerating for visitors.

There is simply nothing like it elsewhere in East Africa.  The Canopy Forest Walk is an attractions that brings visitors from far and wide and most are glad that they came for the views, the wildlife, the experience of being 50 meters above the forest floor seeing things that one cannot from below.

Kigali-Departure Day 11 – Kigali – Departure for Home:

Breakfast and morning guided walk – Colobus Monkey Tracking – you will find them in large groups here – as many as 200 of them.  Grey Cheeked Mangabey Monkey Tracking or Forest Walk.  The choice is yours.

Lunch at Nyungwe Forest Lodge

Depart for Kigali and airport departure

Overnight lodging can be arranged in case you have a morning departure time

Visits to arts and crafts markets can be included in Kigali and you can have your lunch at the original Hotel Rwanda before departing
