5 day Rwenzori Mountains – Semliki Valley Hiking Safari that takes in the Rwenzori Mountains and the Semliki Valley


On 5 day Rwenzori Mountains – Semliki Valley Hiking Safari you combine the tallest Mountain Range in Africa with one of the most scenic wonders of the Western Rift – the Semliki Valley. The Rwenzori Mini-Hike is 7 to 8 hours over Bamba Pass with elevations up to 3000 meters and the Semliki Valley is one of the lowest with its tropical Jungles spilling over from the Democratic Republic of Congo

This 5 day Safari is a one of kind Uganda for Hiking Enthusiasts – Mountain Climbs giving you a taste of Rwenzori Mountains and the jungle trails below in the Semliki Valley.


Day 1- Fort Portal:

The 5 day Rwenzori Mountains – Semliki Valley Hiking Safari Begins. Drive to Fort Portal from Kampala – about 4 hours plus check into the Hotel of your choice getting ready for your Rwenzori Mountains Mini-Hike.

Lunch

In the afternoon we do some light hiking and visit the Amabere Caves, a place of myth, legend an scenic beauty.  This is a guided walk where you learn about the history of the Toro People.  There is also a pleasant waterfall for you enjoy after visiting the cave.

The guided Hike continues and you visit three nearby explosion crater lakes which speak of times of the earth’s upheaval that left countless of explosion crater lakes behind and some of them exploded when the Egyptians were building the pyramids.

Dinner

Lodging:  Mountains of the Moon Hotel – moderate  other hotels can be selected

Meal Plan: Lunch – Dinner

Day 2 – Rwenzori Mountains of the Moon Mini Hike:

Early Start and drive to the Kazingo UWA Trailhead where authorized guides will take you over Bamba Pass.

Things that are need for today’s Hike:  A daypack, a walking stick, 3 liters of water, packed lunch, snacks and a Hiking Stick would be great – the services of a porter can be arranged and you will be glad that you did so later in the hike.

You will need waterproof hiking boots, long-trousers, long-sleeved shirt, rain-jacket or poncho, hat, all things to protect you on the hike.  Others will wear shorts, t-shirts – protect yourself on this mini hike.

The Rwenzori Mountains Mini Hike of 7 to 8 hours passes through thick Mountain Forests where you see the entertaining Rwenzori Colobus Monkeys, also Blue Monkeys, Red Tailed Monkeys.

Your eyes will pop wide open as you come across the giant earthworms, the Three-Horned Chameleons and the colorful Rwenzori Turacos.

As you climb through the Bamboo Zone toward some of the peaks on the pass which exceed 3000 meters in elevation, on  a clear day you will have breathtaking views of the Western Rift Valley, the Semliki River winding its way like a miniature Congo.

The Rwenzori Mini-Hike Portion of this 5 day Hiking Safari is well worth the effort as you descend 8 hours later into the town of Bundibugyo which is a small town on the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Lodging here is limited – you can stay a the Vanilla Inn.  You can get a decent room here and nice meal along with a cold drink.

The other choice is to  have our driver guide take you to the Semliki Wildlife Reserve and Park where you can stay at the upmarket Semliki Safari Lodge or Ntoroko Safari Lodge.

Day 3 – Chimp Trekking – Sempaya Hot Springs Trail:

Breakfast

Chimpanzee Treeking – Chimpanzees have been habituated by the University of Indiana Staff and Researchers and are now open for trekking.

The trek begins at at 8 am and is about 3 1/2 hours in length – the chances of seeing chimpanzees here are lesser, however the setting of the forest, the jungle make up for it.

Lunch

The Sempaya Hot Springs Trail has a level of difficulty that is easy to medium and most should not have a problem, especially after the Rwenzori Mountain Mini-Hike.

This is a guided trail with a Uganda Wildlife Authority Ranger. To get to the Sempaya Hot Springs themselves is a short trail.  The Hot Springs is often veiled in a cloud of steam, surrounded by a forest and palm trees with red-tailed monkeys, gray cheeked mangabeys, and black and white colobus monkeys.

The male spring is a geyser which spouts up scalding hot water 2 meters high while the other hot spring is referred to as a female spring that does not spout up into the air, both have water temperatures that exceed 100 degrees Celsius.

Dinner

Nocturnal Game Drive where you see the creatures of the night and predators on the prowl.

Day 4 – Lake Albert Boat Ride – Game Drive:

Breakfast

Morning Boat Safari on Lake Albert where there is a good chance to see the most sought after bird in Africa, the Shoebill Stork.  This is especially true in the morning.

See Fishermen out on this large lake, that when storms blow can be quite dangerous.

There is a large waterfall, a sort of miniature Murchison Falls that you will see while on the boat safari.

Keep your eyes open and your camera ready for other water-birds that can be spotted here.

With right planning we can arrange a day of fishing for you for the Nile Perch that is the largest fresh water fish in Africa.

Lake Albert harbors quite a few big Nile Perch.

Lunch

Afternoon Game Drive where you have a chance to see a few Forest Elephants, Leopards, Antelopes of various types, buffaloes and other wildlife, add on top of that the fabulous scenery and you have a great afternoon.

Dinner

Lodging:  Semliki Safari Lodge – Upmarket – Ntokoro Safari Lodge

Meal Plan: Breakfast – Lunch – Dinner

Day 5 – Return to Kampala:

Breakfast and drive toward Kampala – Lunch in Fort Portal.

Arrive in the late afternoon in Kampala or 45 minutes later in Entebbe.
