Uganda - Going on a Solo Safari in Africa

Reality - Solo Safaris are expensive-it is not the entrance fees, the permits, not even lodging, which are higher than shared, it is the transportation cost.

Transportation being a proper safari vehicle for maximum viewing of wildlife, an experienced driver - guide with experience and having no one sharing the cost of fuel.  Presently diesel fuel runs about 1.10 USD plus a liter. When there is no one to share the costs - it is you alone who have to bear the expenses of transportation, driver, fuel.  That simply can amount to a lot.

Below are some ways that  a Solo Traveler in Uganda can go on Safari and keep the price on the low side.

This year Africa-Discover its Pearl - Uganda

What can a Solo Safari Traveler do to save money on a Safari

  • Travel with a friend or friends - that alone will save hundreds of dollars, and it is often more fun to share in the experience of being in the Wild of Africa.

  • Hook up with an existing group going on Safari:  This is something we often do and again it saves more money for the group already booked and for you.

  • Book a scheduled Safari Tour:  Some safari tour companies have scheduled safari tours of the most common places visited and you can book a place with them.  The price will vary by the number of participants.  Stay away from groups of larger than six in a van.

  • Travel by Bus:  This can be an experience of a lifetime...sometimes like a roller coaster ride...depending on the bus driver.  You take a bus to the town closest to the park you are visiting.  Then hire a vehicle (have a Ugandan negotiate for you) to the accommodation you have booked and once there they will most likely be able to get you hooked up with others on a safari drive, etc.  Let them know ahead of time.  (Bus ride - avoid taking food, or drink from fellow passengers, there have been instances where travelers were drugged and robbed)

  • Gorilla Tracking:  Obtain your gorilla permit well before the time that you plan to go tracking, the same would be for Chimpanzee Tracking, all other activities are easier.

  • Stay in Budget Accommodations:  A single traveler can get a single room in Kampala at 15 usd per night with bath and breakfast.  Park accommodations of similar quality will run around 20 to 30 usd per night.  A la Carte eating will come out more economical in some cases than full board, one needs to do the math.
