Africa's Women - Stories, Accounts, Pictures

Life for women of Africa-Uganda-Kenya

I was born WomanI was born Woman: The struggle of women in East Africa.  The story of one woman's struggle in a world where survival is everything.  Finding a job can be a nightmare, no matter what the educational background might be.  Knowing someone in the place where you are applying is everything.

African Dance-Thoughts on SensualityAfrican Dance - Thoughts on Sensuality: Observing a woman dance in Northern Kenya back in 1996.  I am sure the place is now closed since it was owned and run by the SPLA group and peace has now come to South Sudan.

A woman wrapped in ReligionA Woman wrapped in Religion:  A woman caught between two worlds. At night she pursues something that no one is supposed to know, she does it in order to survive.  In the daytime her life is quite different, within she is torn between two worlds.

Christmas - All year long:  Every encounter we have can bring us a gift of insight.  Here is an encounter with a woman at the edge of a slum in Kampala, Uganda.  The power of a random act of kindness and the reception of such an act.

Thoughts on RelationshipsThoughts on Relationship:  When two come together - it is like a rope tightly pulled between them.  Here are some thoughts on relationships between men and women formed in Africa some years back.

Catherine Ajok: 13 years in captivity with the LRA, recently set free.  A forced wife of Joseph Kony, read her story of being kidnapped one night from her secondary school, her captivity and eventual freedom from being enslaved by Joseph Kony and the LRA.

Alice Auma LakwenaAlice Auma Lakwena: The warrior priestess who led thousands of Acholi warriors into battle with sticks and stones.  Joseph Kony was her cousin but the two were very different, Alice Lakwena before her death repeatedly asked Joseph Kony to give up his destructive ways.

Beauty of the HeartBeauty of the Heart: This is about inner and outer beauty, while looking at the Kaloli Bird.  The Kaloli Bird is actually the Marabou Stork and in the eyes of many, just plain ugly, but what is beauty?

Water-Plastic Containers and the Liberation of WomenWater – Plastic Containers and the Liberation of Women:  How the plastic container changed life in Africa.  When I drive home, I can see children carry those Jerry Cans, yellow in color and low in price up paths to their homes after buying some water.

Sarah NdagireSarah Ndagire:  A Ugandan Musician with heart.  In a sea of sameness, Sarah Ndagire stands out.  In Uganda musicians often copy one another's style.  Sarah has a style that is uniquely her own.  I like to call her the Tracy Chapman of Uganda, she certainly has a message in her songs.

Africa's Women in Pictures:  A look at the women of Africa in pictures.  African Women of all kinds of backgrounds in East Africa.  The faces of these women show the story of the African Woman more than words can.
